Being a Beginner Week
Every artist is going to discover that they're a beginner again. We return to this important phase multiple times as we try new mediums, new techniques, and new methods of displaying our efforts. The trick is to rejoice at our status instead of being frustrated.
Greetings! I'm Kiki-Tayler, a perpetual beginner and ever-practicing optimist.
We all return to being beginners multiple times. Personally I've been a beginner at least a dozen times. The short above was my experience going from watercolors over to oil paints. Admittedly I did not take the transition well, and swore off oils for several years. But, when I did return to them (because of a college class, not by choice) they became one of my favorite mediums.
My first experience as a beginning oil painter was a flop because, frankly, high school me was a brat. The second time was much better because I was willing to accept being a beginner again.
Have you ever come up against a beginner experience that sucked? That's normal. Being a beginner can be frustrating. My goal with this article is to help starting and returning beginners have better experiences.
Let's start by discussion 3 misconceptions about being a beginner:
It’s a reset: You have to start over.
Beginners are dumb and/or idiots
Being a beginner is boring.
Now let’s talk about a few ways you can make being a beginner easier and, hopefully, more fun!
-Acknowledge that you are a beginner. There are going to be things that you don’t know. You’ll have ideas about how things ought to work. You’re going to go through periods of rapid skill increase, and periods of relatively no skill increase. You’ll end up with art pieces that you feel failed completely.
These are all normal and part of the experience. Let them exist, don’t try to prevent them from happening. As you progress, you’ll see them less frequently.
-Step back to the basics. Look at the Fundamentals of Art: Color, Composition/Flow, Value/Light, Form/Shape, and Perspective/Depth. These skills are applicable no matter what material or method you use, and improving them will improve your work across the board. Guaranteed.
So, as a beginner, you should keep these skills handy. They’ll allow you to focus on learning about your specific medium and help you get the results that you want much quicker.
-Seek new information. In this era of the internet, memes, and search engines, finding tutorials for art is simple. Allow yourself to seek these out. Collect different views on how techniques are done, what looks good, and what materials are the best.
But don’t get lost in the research. The best information you’ll get is what the new medium teaches you. Use it with the knowledge that your end result may not be what you hoped, but that you’ll learn a great deal about what works and what doesn’t. Take every new lesson and apply it to the next project.
-Love the Happy Accidents. Bob Ross anyone? His mentality that every mistake is a happy little accident is brilliant. It turns a mistake that, for the artist, can ruin a piece and shifts the perspective into something positive. Now you have the opportunity to add a new layer to your piece.
Allow yourself to make mistakes and don’t reject them. Laugh at them, learn from them, and let them add life to your work.
