Hello! I'm Kiki-Tayler, the one-who-studies-hands.
Hands are complicated things and a daunting challenge for artists everywhere. In this article, I'll walk you through the structure of the hand, how hands bend and move, and how to predict where folds of skin and flesh will appear.
Whenever I'm looking at something complicated, I find it helpful to look at the bones first.
Carpals
The 8 carpal bones don't need to be differentiated. While they do flex and move, we almost never see it from underneath layers of skin and muscle. So I always treat them as a single shape.
Metacarpals
The Metacarpals hide within the palm of your hand, with their far end becoming part of your first knuckle. In between these long bones are elastic muscles and tendons that knit and mesh together to form your palm. Strip all that away and you get those creepy, extra long skeletal fingers.
Phalanges
The Phalanges are your fingers, divided into three categories: Proximal, Intermediate, and Distal. There's not a whole lot of muscle on your fingers, since they rely on a network of muscles and tendons running all the way up into your forearm to move.
The Thumb
The Thumb is a bit tricky. It is only made of 3 bones: A Metacarpal, a proximal phalanges, and a distal phalanges. It also connects down near the wrist.
From here, we can break the hand into three categories of shapes: The Palm, the Fingers, and the Thumb.
I'm also going to talk about the wrist a little, since connecting the hand to the rest of the body can be as tough as drawing it in the first place. Your forearm is made up of two bones: the Radius and the Ulna. These bones twisting over each other is what allows your hand to rotate. If these bones are fused, your range of motion is severely hampered.
You can also see how the hand 'rolls' over the Ulna, with the thumb arcing up and over.
Try setting your arm on a solid surface. Make sure you have enough room for your elbow too. Rest your hand so that both your elbow and the edge of your hand are on the surface. Do your best to keep them in place as you twist your hand to rest your palm on the surface. Now twist so that your palm is facing up. What do you notice?
Let's step further into the motion dynamics of hands.
Our palms will appear to shrink and stretch as they bend and move. Here you can see the hand extended. Now I bring the fingers down into a right angle. See how they seem to slide onto the surface of the palm? The bunching and wrinkling skin under the fingers is the palm compressing to allow them to move.
Now look at how moving the thumb and pinky changes the visual shape of the palm. The structural square has remained unchanged, (relatively), but the meat of the thumb now appears to be a solid 1/4th of the palm. When the pinky bends in, it's metacarpal actually slides slightly, making the natural curve of the palm far more pronounced.
This bunching creates two noticeable lumps in our palm. The Thumb meat, and the edge of the hand. even at rest, these areas are not in-line with the wrist. When scrunched up like so, that difference is far more pronounced.
Hold your hand up to a light so that it is either just a silhouette or so that it is casting a distinct shadow. Move your fingers like the diagram above. Turn your hand and look at the change in shape from different angles. How does the size of your palm change? Now look at your hand in a more even light source and repeat the motions. How does the size of your palm seem to change visually?
As I mentioned, the thumb is tricky. It's first joint (the dot) is buried underneath the palm. This joint gives our hands that hard edge right before the wrist. That joint is a pivot joint, allowing the thumb to swing around the edge of the hand. Without this, our thumb would either always be stuck in opposition to our other fingers, preventing our hand from flattening, or it would always be stuck at the side of our hand.
Feel along your thumb and identify where the joints are. Use your other hand to hold onto one of the joints and, without moving your other hand, move your thumb around. In what ways did you have to twist in order to get a full range of motion? What directions was the joint able to move in? Repeat this with the other joints in the thumb.
Now let's look at the fingers. Specifically how they spread out. An easy trap to fall into is that the palm expands with them, but it doesn't. The space between your metacarpals may change slightly, but you have to be looking really closely to see it so I tend to ignore it. When spread out, your middle finger doesn't move and your pinky moves the most.
Place your hand palm-down on a solid surface. Use your other hand to hold your pinky in place. Now try to spread your fingers without moving your pinky. Did your whole hand have to move to compensate for the immobile pinky? Now hold your middle finger in place and spread your fingers again. Pretty neat, right?
There's a lot going on in this drawing.
- Both sides of the palm are tensed, creating a bowl shape. The angle of the fingers accents that shape as well.
- The fingers are all pointing towards a line drawn from the thumb and angled towards each other.
- Typically, the outer edge of the hand will have sharp angles, versus the soft interior edge. This is easily visible on the thumb.
- Fingernails are wonderful tools for providing depth. Use them to show the curvature of the finger itself.
- Hard shadows tend to form on the edge of the hand, along the back of knuckles, and at the joints.
Hands are wonderful.
But before I wrap the article up, I would like to give you some tips. These are things that I have recently discovered myself and have deepened my understanding of hands.
- The Tendons of your hand will run from the knuckles to the middle of your wrist. No matter how the fingers are bent, your tendons will stay in the same location.
- The twisting motion of your wrist comes from the forearm. But the side-to-side and up-down motion comes from your carpals. Those little guys deserve more credit.
- The best tool for learning how to draw hands is my own hands. I spent a good portion of my prep-time for this article wiggling my hand about and drawing it.
