Description
Finally got around to drawing Samara in her maiden race.
I've greyed her out a considerable amount and absolutely love drawing her like this!

Sean felt the grey filly stir restlessly beneath him. Whilst she had proven bombproof during training, it was obvious that the pre-race nerves were getting to her. But it was understandable, after all, this was her first race.

“Whoa girl” he whispered and gently patted Samara’s neck.

Although this was just a cheap maiden race he felt pressured to bring home a win. Samara had been a favorite during training, and the owners had high hopes that she’d succeed on the track. Additionally, it was decided that the grey filly would be leased out if she sparked some interest, and a maiden race was the perfect opportunity to capture a prospective trainer’s attention.

Sean gripped tightly at the reins as the final call was made. The shrill bell sounded and they were off.

Oliver didn’t usually travel to watch his horses run in overseas races, but he had some business to attend to and took some time off to watch his filly run her maiden race. Samara has been a personal favorite of his. She had a great demeanor, ran well and was out of one of his best broodmares.

He took a quick glance at the race card and smiled. The competition didn’t seem too big; he was confident that his horse had a shot at winning. Plus, she was placed where she ran best; right against the rail. He saw the grey filly walk into the starting box and nodded in approval as he saw the jockey calm the filly.

A soft knock sounded behind him and Oliver turned his gaze from the grey filly to the man behind him.

“Mr. Richard?” asked the stranger.

“Yes, how can I help you?” Oliver asked with a puzzled expression on his face.

“Richard I’m a jockey of Fox Harbour Farms. From what I understand the filly wearing #1, Samara, is yours?” he asked.

“That’s right” Oliver nodded and beckoned the man to take a seat.

Richard smiled and sat down. “I heard that she’s available for lease” he started “and I’d be very interested in her”.

“Well uhh, yes she is up for lease” he stuttered. The sudden interest came as a surprise to him. The filly hadn’t even run her maiden race, and yet this man was willing to lease her. In fact, he’d never even seen her run.

“Don’t you want to wait until the race is over to decide?” Oliver asked cautiously.

“You’re quite right” Richard grinned “I wouldn’t usually do this but I do believe that filly can run.”

“That’s for sure” Oliver smiled “but buyers usually wait until the races have been run.”

“Thing is, I’m sure someone else will snatch her up if I wait. And that’s not a risk I want to take” he said. “She’s out of Chalcedony, right?” Richard asked.

“Hmm a fine broodmare if I’ve ever seen one.” Oliver replied.

“I’d say so” Richard agreed, “We purchased a colt by her, lovely animal, but he still needs some time until he runs his first race. So, when I saw that Samara was up for lease I couldn’t let the opportunity pass.”

“Well I’ll let the staff know that she’ll be leased” Oliver smiled. He was sure that the grey filly would do well under the ever successful Fox Habour Farms. In fact, their own grey filly Make Her Mark had just been named Australian Triple Crown winner. Perhaps a future just as successful awaited Samara.
