Description
12 Monkeys is a very dark and bittersweet film, but damn it if I don't love it precisely because of that. With its premise, with its concepts, a surreal and nightmarish direction by someone like Terry Gilliam to do it justice.
I love it also because it's one of the few timetravel films without plotholes or paradoxes. Because the writers made the galaxy brain move of creating a story that ISN'T about changing the past, but simply EXPLORING the past to collect "pure" samples from it so that the people in the future can study it and figure out a way to clean up the mess they're stuck in.

Either way, I love it also because it has easily my favorite performances from Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis (along with his The Sixth Sense role).
Usually Pitt is cast in charismatic pretty boy roles, while Willis is usually cast as a snarky action hero type.
In this film? Pitt is an UNRECOGNIZABLE unbridled nutcase while Willis is extremely vulnerable, lost and stressed to the max due to the high stakes of his timetravel mission.
They are both excellent actors perfectly capable of creating new characters instead of being "X just being themselves", and although I would love to see more of that, I'm still happy with what we've got, performances like these are stuff to be proud to have on your resume: youtu.be/YkydE5jgUpk
