Description
We're getting into the violence of A Gangster Paradise .Meet the cops. They are pretty much the red shirts of the story. Lots, lots and LOOOTS of violence against the police in this.
And it's gonna get worse, those guys getting riddled and the hanging dude are just the tip of the red, blood-soiled iceberg.
Used the same police cars that appear in the 1990 Dick Tracy movie, after all we already have a certain Dick Tracy-inspired character so why not use some more elements from it? Plus I saw other '30s cop cars and I just liked those the best.
And here's a new OC: police chief Horace Patterson, as you can see he's clearly inspired by Pat Hingle's portrayal of Commissioner Gordon in the '90s Batman movies. Even though I get Hingle's Gordon is based on the earlier incarnations of the character (where he's just a law enforcer who's friends with Batman) I much prefer Gary Oldman's performance and take on the more modern, flashed out, middle-aged Gordon. But the point is that I wanted a pudgy police chief and someone looking like Pat Hingle is exactly what I needed.
Patterson is wearing the police uniform worn by the cops in the Dick Tracy movie, but I decided to have all the other cops wear blue uniforms. I want each character to stand out and have their own colour scheme and distinct design and once again A Gangster Paradise is doing anything but trying to be historically accurate. "Because it's cool" is behind the visual choices I made for all these, it's meant to be a stylish comic book spectacle, not a biopic or even an alternate history thing.

"I want each character to stand out and have their own colour scheme and distinct design" <- I love that. That's always what I think about myself as well when I design characters. It's important to let there be suspension of disbelief for the sake of iconography.
And is it just me, or does the "GOD HELP ME..."-cop look an awful lot like Nicolas Cage?

I guess only history buffs or guys that are experts on the evolution of police uniforms are going to nitpick the difference between Patterson's outfit and that of the other policemen. As long as it looks like it fits in the period, nobody will notice and would just assume that Patterson wears black in the same way Captain Phasma wears a different armor and clothing than the other stormtroopers.
Eh, maybe kinda because of the eyebrows, didn't had Cage in mind when I drew him, just wanted to do a thin little spineless guy who won't last two seconds on the battlefield. I wouldn't cast Cage for the role, I see him more as one of those Mafia enforcers who're shooting the shit out of them.

Historical accuracy should be irrelevant for this anyway. I mean, even the guy with the History Buffs channel on Youtube loves the movie 300 despite being historically inaccurate in several areas, BECAUSE it's intentionally stylized and overly exaggerated.
