Yup I kept the white spaces clean. I actually use ink for black and white stuff so I outlined Ahiru and Fakir first then builder up the background by layers (light to dark). I don't think I used a white pen but I did use white paint for the splatter effect. After that it's just scan and add that lighting effect via Photoshop

Light to dark..I'll have to remember that! I have a piece I've been meaning to paint for a long time, a grey scale of sorts, and now it makes sense!
