Description

Fundraiser art pt.3 is sold, and proceeds go toward bail bonds of BLM protesters and small business in Richmond, VA as part of the Artist Block Party event on Instagram artist _blockparty (I'll be making postcards of the 3 paintings for those who missed picking this up)

Last of the 3 periwinkle pieces. These are small perennial cultivars and are thought to have been a common flower planted by enslaved Americans on the graves of their loved ones. The hardiness of Periwinkles is part of the reason they are persisting on these sites for hundreds of years (they are invasive in some states but the Vinca varieties sold at box stores here in Florida can be safely planted. The species seems to a bit naturalized here, I sometimes see the white and pink ones growing on the sides of roads) Shells and personal possessions were also commonly placed to honor those who have passed. (Credit for the idea goes to the organizer of the block party event)To learn more about this particular topic, look up Periwinkle Initiative
