Largely thanks to Diya, Sahar was slowly starting to get more accustomed to Equestria. She still missed her home dearly and Equestria could never compare, but her new place of living didn’t feel quite so overwhelming now that she had a friend to help her through it. It still wasn’t her home but now she could breathe a bit easier.

But her marriage was a different story.

No matter how hard Sahar tried to reach out to her, Heavenly Glow was still so cold and distant. She was always away tending to this duty or that, and when she was around she was usually lecturing Sahar on Equestrian etiquette. She treated their marriage like a business arrangement, not a partnership. There was no connection there.

But if Sahar was going to live in this land with this mare, she wanted a connection with her. She didn’t want to be taught and lectured by this mare who was supposed to be her spouse, she wanted to connect with her as a partner. Or at least try to. But Heavenly wouldn’t even try.

Tonight there was an intimate dinner arranged for just the two of them and it was not going well so far. For once Sahar wasn’t surrounded by delegates and in-laws, forced to practice her etiquette and Equish skills in front of a crowd, but being alone with Heavenly wasn’t much better.

Sahar awkwardly poked at her dinner with a fork, trying to think of something to start a conversation.

“This food is good to you? Like Saddle Arabian food it is not, because—“

“Yes. The food is good.”

Heavenly answered bluntly, cutting off any further elaboration. She always did this, giving the shortest responses possible in response to anything Sahar had to say. Especially about her homeland. It was like she didn’t want to have a conversation, so of course being around her got old very fast.

Sahar picked up the napkin before her and started folding it, having nothing else to do and not feeling hungry enough to eat.

“Today Diy—Ginger Root and me see the gardens. Very beautiful the flowers are. What do you do?”

“What did I do? I delivered a sermon at the church today. It’s what I do every Sunday, educate the masses on the glory of the God Mother. Gaia knows we sure need her grace.”

Sahar wasn’t particularly interested in her wife’s religion, nor did she understand it very well. But it was something she was interested in and for once she was actually talking to her in detail.

“Yes, Goddess is good! Religion we have in Saddle Arabia too. We teach each other, perhaps. You take me to church and teach about Gaia to me.”

Suddenly, the floor squeaked as Heavenly got up to move her chair closer to Sahar.

“You truly want to learn about our God Mother?”

Sahar looked up from her folded napkin to see Heavenly...smiling? She’d never seen her smile at all until now, especially not this much! It seemed her interest in religion was the way to her heart, but honestly, Sahar was glad she’d gotten through to her at all no matter the topic.

“I do! Your passion I want to learn, to understand you.”

Heavenly fluttered her wings in excitement.

“Then we shall arrange it at once! I will bring you on a tour of the cathedral first thing tomorrow, and next Sunday you can attend a service—“

As Heavenly went on, Sahar felt a sense of accomplishment that she was finally getting somewhere with her. She finally found the key to break her out of her cold and distant shell. Even though it wasn’t what Sahar believed in, learning about her worldview could help her understand her better. It could bring them closer, and maybe then Heavenly would be open to learning about her too.

Sahar could only hope that this would signal a positive change for both of them.
