Description
This is what happens when you try to record a tutorial but don't have long to do so. Sorry for the less-than-excellent microphone, it's bad but it's not as bad as the one I used for my other tutorial.Anyway tonight I had access to recording equipment so I decided to put up a quick tutorial video to give a brief overview of how I draw South Park characters, and how I make stuff glow.
It's probably not in-depth enough for anyone to use, but oh well.
I'll probably put another, slightly more useful tutorial of some kind up sometime in the next few days, if I'm presented with the opportunity to record at a sane time of day.
South Park is © Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

Make a copy of the body you've traced and then cut the arms off and turn them into their own seperate movieclips.

So, as you know I'm learning Flash CS4 on my own. Not familiar with any of the terminology or anything. I did manage to outline my character using the line tool. The outline is in a separate layer and has been converted to a symbol (whatever that means), but I'm unable to use the eyedropper tool or color it. Is there something I'm not doing correctly?

Hmm... I suck at explaining stuff, but I'll do my best. This will probably sound dumb, but roll with me.
Think of converting something to a symbol as the Flash equivalent of putting something in a transparent bag.
You can see what's in the bag, but you can't really change the contents of it unless you go into the bag,
and at the same time, nothing you do outside of the bag will affect the contents.
Hope that made some sort of sense.
Anyway, if you want to colour in the outline symbol you made, double click on it. This'll take you inside
that symbol and you'll be able to add colour using the fill tool, change bits of the outline, etc.
When you're done, double click on a blank area of the screen to get out of the symbol and back to the main bit
(called the "main timeline").

Makes sense. Kind of like telling the program that the entire "symbol" is supposed to be a single entity or something.
I've tried double-clicking on the outline, but was only able to color the parts I created with the oval tool (eyes, hands, head). And, of course, when I color the head, it also colors the hair.
No worries, though. I guess I can wait until class finishes at the end of the year. I mean, if I were to finish the outline, I wouldn't even know what to do with it. Thanks for your help!

Ah, I remember having that problem... The line tool can be a bit misleading about
whether or not the lines are actually connected.
If you look next to the name of the layer, there'll be a coloured square.
If you hit that, it'll turn on "outline view" for that layer and you'll be able
to zoom in and hunt for gaps in the outline.

That helped. Thanks.
Part of my problem earlier was that I "grouped" lines together to form certain segments (I'd highlight all the lines surrounding the shirt and group it as "shirt), and of course it doesn't allow me to color anything unless all the lines are "broken apart". My character's been outlined, and the outline has been colored, but obviously I don't even know what to do beyond this point, so I'm hoping that's where the class will take me. Just like in your video, I've outlined the entire head - even the part that's "behind" the hair - and the outline for the head is still visible, obviously, but for animation purposes it'll probably help if I have to group it again, I think. Thanks again!

Forgot to mention...all segments (eyes, pupils, hair, body, feet, legs, hands) have been "grouped" together with eachother already.

Just learning Flash (CS4) on my own for now. I've outlined my character and 'grouped' all the segments together (eyes, mouth, hair, etc), but I'm unable to use the eyedropper tool or color it. The outline is in a separate layer and has been converted to a symbol. What am I doing wrong?

I got this thing to play the first time but then I had to pause it and it got "messed" so now whenever I try to play it, it won't play. Its just keeps on saying "loading" when it's not. Gosh! And I really want to know how to do this!

And yeah... after seeing loads of tutorial videos that taught me something but were fairly robotic, I decided to try and avoid doing that.
Although I'm sure how informative mine are in the end.

Muahahaha! You do it so well! Do you do other voices too? I wonder if you could do the SP kids if you had the right sound editing program

KineticSquirrel In reply to sphinx-face [2011-05-01 04:39:49 +0000 UTC]
The only real South Park voice I can come even close to doing properly is Mr. Mackey.
For some reason the more weird the voice the easier it is for me to imitate.
But besides Kenny and a kid who's only been on the show once (Casey Miller ),
I can't really do voices for SP kids. Their voices and accents are just too "normal".
Plus I'm not super confident about my impersonation of an American accent either.
