US is supposed to be a lost colony. I don't know why, but I always imagined Czech won out as the most prominent language in the North-East of the continent, overcoming the Germanic languages from the west and Romance languages from the south across the inner sea. The language likely would be some development of Czech, like French is a development of Latin, but I don't know enough about linguistics or Czech to imagine what that would be like
That and I use the Airfortress universe as a way to explore the places I really want to visit, and the Czech Republic is certainly in that top 5.
