Let's see. Alyx is pitted against an overwelming alien force bent on enslaving humanity. Chell endured repeated experiments and psycological torment at the whims of a psycopathic supercomputer. Both of them were nearly killed in all their struggles; one through impalement, the other by fire and a nurotoxin. Neither one came away unscathed. I think it'd be easy for them to sympathize with each other. I could totally buy into this.
