I know, right. I don't like their style change though, and this coming from the guy who liked Papa Roach's style change and Linkin Park's style change.

I like the style change with Fall Out Boy, I can't stop listening to the album. I don't think it worked for Linkin Park on the A Thousand Suns, with the exception of Iridescent. It worked better for them on Living Things.

I get the same kind of crap for listening to Black Veil Brides. And yes, all the ignorant, sterotypical deviants may now reply to this and say that does make me emo 'have you seen them?' but, it means nothing to me, especially if you're trying to use it as an insult. Emo is not an insult, grow up. It means 'emotional' and any other thing that is associated with the term is a sterotype. The end.

Bonsai Rob isn't even American; and emo is virtually a purely American subgenre. I've learned about it from people who were there in the scene when it existed, not from someone who learns about types of music from what someone at a school tells them. Having sad songs with violent lyrics doesn't make a band emo. Emo has nothing to do with lyrical content. And it is CERTAINLY NOT subjective; it is a subgenre of punk with a clearly defined musical style descended from early hardcore. In fact, the word "emo" is short for "emotive hardcore". Perfect examples of emo include any song by Rites of Spring, and the songs on Gray Matter's "Take It Back" EP. And for the record, a human being cannot be "an emo". That's like someone who likes classical music saying "I'm a classical" or someone who likes hip hop saying "I'm a hip hop". It doesn't make any sense, and Fall Out Boy are musical disgraces for calling themselves "emos" and their bass player is talentless other than being a prettyboy. Joe Lally should kick his ass.

Uhmmm.... Hate to break it to you, guy; Fall Out Boy isn't emo. I mean it's not even close. At all. Listen to Rites of Spring or Native Nod or Cap'n Jazz if you want to listen to emo. They're good bands. Try em out!

I know that, and they are mistaken. Emotive hardcore has died out for the most part. What you are listening to is pop-rock. If I gathered a bunch of people that called themselves unicorns, does that make them unicorns? No, it doesn't. People are using the term "emo" very loosely these days.

And calm down. Jeeze, the point of this website is to interact. If you can't handle an opinion, don't put up your work.

What do song titles have to do with the genre of music? Emotive hardcore, aka "emo" existed mainly in the 80's in D.C.
Fall Out Boy doesn't play emo music, they play pop rock. Rites of Spring and Fugazi play emo music. Even Wikipedia knows this.
Kids who call themselves "emo" are more commonly known as tools.

Emo's not as clear cut as that, it's subjective, like any genre of music. The general definition of emo music would be pieces involving angst, jealousy, and other seemingly deep feelings thet the teenage audience will grow out of soon enough. Most emo is pop-rock because it's popular, and has to be catchy for a teen audience.

Nearly all pieces of music are based off of emotion. Johnny Cash, Vivaldi, and Brittany Spears have deep emotions in their music, are they emo?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
BonzaiRob In reply to video-massacre [2008-09-29 20:52:42 +0000 UTC]
Vivaldi, Johnny Cash, no: they wrote true emotional feelings as adults.
Britney: No, she has mostly happy songs written for her, and is too pop. There's an alt/punk rebellious feeling to emo.
Actually Johnny Cash's music was enjoyed by teenagers of the time, so it could be classed as emo in some ways. Ring of Fire comes to mind; imagine someone screaming the lyrics and Rise Against could have a new cover. However, the majority of Cash's works are from lasting emotion (loss, sorrow) rather than their transient teenage equivalents (iniquity, angst).
Emo music isn't deep or lasting, it's cathartic when angry and somewhat petulant when sad. Since those are the two main emotions covered, there's really not much else to it. It's not true punk either, as real 70s punks don't care if they get rich and famous from it. They do it for the lulz.
