mild spoilers for the pokemon anime's alola league ahead
so The alola league is going on in the pokemon anime right now, and while i kinda feel like it's not as epic as previous leagues, like sinnoh's and kalos'. There is one thing that kinda is an interesting reference.
So longtime fans will remember how Ash lost the first pokemon league to Richie: Charizard gets bored near the end and falls asleep, not wanting to bother with Richie's pikachu. The Ref gives the match to Richie.
Seems in the Alola league it happens again, this time with Ash's Rowlett vs Hau's Decidueye, after a devastating attack, Rowlett looks defeated, but in reality fell asleep.... the match was about to be called for Hau, something i expected the pokemon anime to do, since it likes to subvert the game's characters in weird ways. But Rowlett is motivated back up and ends up defeating its older evolution in typical and illogical pokemon anime fashion....
kinda feel mixed about those results, but it was an interesting way to call back to the original, Even Ash's reaction to Rowlett's sleeping is showing that he remembers the bs charizard pulled on him and isn't having it!
So yea comment and enjoy
pokemon belongs to Nintendo

Heβll probably lose in the next round to someone from Galar(like Ash lost the Johto silver conference to someone with a Blaziken).

Yeah, I always thought that event in the Kanto league was BS. Had it not been for the Orange Island arc and its episode of Charizard vs Poliwrath, I would've hated Ash's Charizard XP

yea Ash's Charizard really needed that redemption arc, its cockiness and laziness wasn't a good plot choice. Even as a kid I felt it was a letdown every time charizard just sat there refusing to battle

Remember that Charmander was originally owned by Damien, a smug jerk who abandoned Charmander believing he was too weak to be worth building.
If this is taken into account, its very likely that Charmander had self esteem issues, which is shown constantly with his interactions with Squirtle and Bulbasaur. He is always the shy one out.
When he evolves into Charmeleon and later Charizard however; his power grows and he begins to see Ash as a weak master. His decision to disobey and ignore Ash's orders makes perfect sense if you consider his behavior is reflecting the way Damien saw him. Unlike Charmander who was nervous and unsure of itself, and Charmeleon who attacked everything on sight to prove it was the toughest. Charizard refuses to fight enemies it views as weaker then it, seeing it as trivial. This is why it ignores the championship battle (figured it was a waste of time), but assaults Mewtwo on sight in the first movie (sees a worthy opponent and wants to fight).
