Another one, for as you might know, Basiliks are among my favourite fantasy beings.

When a 9 year-old cock lays an egg on a dung-heap, and the egg is hatched by a toad, thus is the basilisk born! The embodiment of venom--so poisonous is this creature that its very glance kills!

Yeah, the embodiment of poion thing, that it's breath, sight, touch can kill and it even poisonsthe water it drinks makes me think that the creature could be highly irradiated.
And having an egg hatched by other animal? That's like breed parasitizm in birds!

Pliny the Elder tells of an account he heard where a man on horseback managed to stab a basilisk with a spear; the beast's venomous blood turned the very lance deadly, killing the man who held it--the poison went through his body, through the saddle, and killed the horse he was riding!

Nice version sir, its one of those creatures open to a lot of reinterpretations especially with the confusion around basilisk/cockatrice forms. What would the scale be on this guy, chicken sized or bigger?

It's certainly a lot bigger. At least as tall as man.
Well The basilisk is a prominent figure of Polish legends, and it has not been differed from coctrice really. (it's depicted as a snake-chicken hybrid.) Also if you look at the medieval depictions of the creatures, they usually take this form. I think the particular form of a lizard basilisk and chicken like cockatrice is something more realted to RPG games.

I seem to remember reading a bestiary that suggested you got one version if a snake gestated a chicken egg, and another if a chicken gestated a snake egg, but I'm not sure if the source is original.

Ale promieniowanie akurat bardzo pasuje do bazyliszka. On miał ponoć zabijać nie tylko wzrokiem ale też oddechem, dotykiem, i zatruwając wodę którą pił.

Ciekawa teoria z tym promieniowaniem, idealnie łączy się z jego ogólnie trującą naturą. Bazyliszek tak trochę kojarzy się z jakimś potworem dosłownie z innego świata - nie potrafi współistnieć z żadnym innym stworzeniem, a sprowadza destrukcję niczym Coś z filmu Johna Carpentera.
Ja tam miałem teorię z hipnozą - bazyliszek siłą woli paraliżuje lub w ogóle "wyłącza" ofiarę, która mu spojrzy w oczy. Taka ulepszona wersja biokinezy, tylko oddziałuje na cudze ciała.
