I've got to read this. I need to look at some new pastures other than the Poe, Lovecraft, etc. waterhole.

BTW, have you read any tales by M.R. James? If not, here's one of his most frightening stories. I can never stay calm after reading it and refuse to be alone. It is just too scary...gaslight.mtroyal.ab.ca/jamesX0…

I don't think I have... mm. that sounds interesting.

Of Masterton I wouldn't recommend that book for a start. I'd Recommend Chosen Child, or the Mirror. Probalby the best of his works in my opinion.. Others worth reading are Body and Blood and Devils of D-Day.

Then you need to check it out. It is a goldmine for a modern Pickman like you.

I'll check them out! But you KNOW I'll be going for Prey at some point...and you know why.

Haha, for thesame reasons i grabbed this book. And you might get disappointed for the same reasons I got disappointed with it.

Anyway, thing with this guy is that he's sort of repetitive.  He's extremely creative with his ideas but if you read more of him you'll notice that the overall patterns of events develop similarly here and there. That's why it's best to go with the mist brilliant ones at first. In spite of that I still find his other works entertaining to read. He's got really good ideas. Not to mention he's descriptions of gory scenes. he's basically unmatched in those.

Dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, almost every writer follows some sort of pattern. Lovecraft himself did it! He took familiar plot elements and "originalized" them: "The Tomb" = "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward", "Dagon" = "The Call of Cthulhu", etc.

Hm, gory scenes? I've come across some pretty nasty scenes before: in the writings of author Darren Shan. While he's technically a "children's author", the chapter "Demons" in his horror novel ("for children") Lord Loss has some disturbing monsters and some of the most violent, shocking writing I've ever read. I know it's considered a children's book, but if you read it, I think you'd actually find some truly horrific stuff in there.

I guess Masterton does that a lot more.

hmmm I never heard of that. I guess masterton's work is never ever to be considered children's book. In fact that what made me read it first when I was 13 - how definately my dad told me I mustn't

I don't think Darren Shan's work is to be considered a children's book, either.

"Lord Loss sows all sorrows of the world
Lord Loss seeds the grief-starched trees

In the center of the web, lowly Lord Loss bows his head

Mangled hands, naked eyes
Fanged snakes his soul line
Curled inside like textured sin
Bloody, curdles sheets for skin

In the center of the web, vile Lord Loss torments the dead

Over strands of red, Lord Loss crawls
Dispensing pain, despising all
Shuns friends, nurtures foes
Ravages hope, breeds woe
Drinks moon, devours suns
Twirls his thumbs till the reaper comes

In the center of the web, lush Lord Loss is all that's left.
"

That poem is from the book. And what does Lord Loss look like? img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20…

My dad is the best I could hope for...he got me a book when I was younger called Scary. It was about the nastiest things in history.

My dad is pretty cool too but I totally understand his objections. The story collection I read then contained story called Eric the Pie (you can find it on the internet) this thing is a bit.. extreme. Really, even now. The author himself stated it was made in an attept to push the boundaries of such gruesome literature a a bit further. Anyway in some fan convention this story was read loudly. People were getting sick and had to leave!

I know you are going to read it now, just remember you were warned!

Oh, I agree, I agree. Too much of horror can be bad.

I don't know if I'm going to read "Eric the Pie". Since people were getting sick, then I won't. I read a passage from a horror novel where an impaled man is examined by the coroner and I felt nauseous after reading it.

Okay, than it's not a good idea to read this one.

Of other short stories I could recommend:

The Heart of Helen Day, The Sympathy Society, Pig's Dinner  (a bit disgusting at moments but not nearly as far as he can go) Bejing Craps

The others are mostly lacking in his signature big amounts of sex and gore

I'll stay away from it. Maybe I'll read it on my deathbed when I've got nothing to lose XD

Got it!

Sex is better when it is very subtle and implied. As in Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death", where Prospero's party is implied to be an orgiastic kind of thing.

I also read a Mythos tale that should be named "The Things in the Pit"but, instead , has the name "The testament of Dr. Henry Worthy" by Brian Lumley. The pit is filled with fungus and some has crept over the edge where around 1900, some deformed plant-like growths were found by a scholar, who vanished soon after. He could not classify them, or figure out their fungus-like cell structure. The nasty fungus in the pit seems to be of barrel-shaped forms with feeder roots entering a pool of ick ! Eating or even just handling the things spreads the diseased metamorphosis from human to fungus thing. Fungus sheets are all over. It's all mutated human tissue ! The doctor relates his futile battle to stop the fungus from growing on -and IN- his son. The battle is given up when the feeder roots start leaking a green oil !

The one touch of humor is when a man espies the fungus-creature that was once a young man, lurching with all limbs fused, back to the pit ! He shouts at the thing's father,"Something horrible out there ! Something HORRIBLE !!!". the doctor figures that the man, a poacher, is not going to go telling his hysterical account to the authorities. Not right away, not with that brace of fine hares swinging from his neck !

You will find it in the book THE HORROR AT OAKDEENE by Brian Lumley, Arkham House.

I not long after, became saturated with mythos yarns, all missing the deep essense of HPL and his contemporaries (app. they had his guidance, and without it ,they finally turned the mythos into fan-fiction).

I had similar situation, stories of Lovecraft's more modern followers seemed to have lacked some vital ingredient that makes them flat and hollow.
