Description
Mythical "bird" of Persia."She is a mystical bird who in some stories nests on the world's tallest mountain and in others nests in the tree of life. She has seen the birth and death of many worlds, and the coming and going of many civilizations, and the eternal lightless void beyond all life. She brings medicine and wisdom to the world, and she is the loving mother of abandoned babies, and she assists heroes who are worthy of her aid on their journeys. She is the queen of all birds, and their souls are her feathers. She is a symbol of healing, life, motherhood, wisdom, transcendence, imagination, the soul itself."Β

*snicker* then I'll give it food. Does it prefer bird feed or vulpine snacks?

Oh my! She looks BEAUTIFUL! I'm happy to see you attempt her again. Such a bizarre creature with a rich cultural history and ancient wisdom.Β
I love the positioning of her legs. From the front she resembles a vague dog, but the rest is very much avian.
I think you captured her grace and intelligence quite well, while also emphasizing how strange and animalistic she is. I can see her lovingly nurturing the infant Zal, but also hunting large animals in distant dream lands far from her mountain home.

You would be correct. The Simurgh, regardless of her original cultural meanings, has always been to me a very personal symbol of the weird and fantastic, and the beauty and wonder in such things. This is largely inspired by her exotic appearance, her divine role in stories, and various descriptions of the Simurgh, such as it being perched on a primordial tree in the middle of a primordial sea, or it being old enough to have seen the world end several times and gather much knowledge and wisdom from each world.

I see, it's definately a very unique figure. I wonder was it ever properly represented in popular culture? I remember an old rts game called Persian Wars, which was set in arabian nights-styled world. It has worst AI ever but some interesting scenarios and units (like ghouls in steampunk tanks or two-headed harryhausen rocs) unfortunately the Simurg was portrayed as giant genie with an axe. I lthink you could enjoy it anyway though so I recommend to look for it

I checked out some screenshots and a gamelay video. Persian Wars looks quite colorful and fun! I'd play almost solely for the chance to see steampunk ghouls battling classic two-headed rocs!
Yeah, I don't think the Simurgh has ever been properly represented in pop culture, at least not in mainstream stuff. Which is a shame, because she looks like she could easily measure up with other popular monsters. Personally, I always wanted to see her help Sinbad in one of Harryhausen's films.
To make up for this, I do plan on featuring her in a weird fantasy story of mine, and I plan on writing a poem, inspired by Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith, about her and the strange, alien things she has seen in previous worlds.

The game is full of contrasts. You've got this absolutely hopeless AI (and I just can't emphasise enough how bad it is. It's beyond words. XD ) The units are very unbalanced too. Β Once you get access to genies and siege engines you can win any scenario with one or occasionally two types of units. You can kill anΒ almost indefinite amount of regular units suffering no losses at all. On the other hand, the plot is excellent. The protagonist is often faced with meaningful choices that will alter the course of the game completely or in some cases might lead to anΒ immediate loss. This makes the game quite unpredictable and despite having played it a lot years ago, I'm pretty sure I haven't tried all possible paths and choices. Individual scenarios are also very creative and unique, presented with some backstory and "side quests" allowing to complete otherwise very difficult tasks with more ease. there is even one quest with Necronomicon (although the book is not named and only after having read Lovecraft and learning of certain mad Abdul I realised it .) Finally the unit and building designs are awesome. The army is divided into infantry (the most useless thing ever, strongest unit can be killed with single fiery breath of a flying genie
) cavalry, creatures, siege engines and genies ; Example: cdn-static.gamekult.com/gamekuβ¦
I know I'm biased here because i really like this oriental stylization. XD All in all, I have a feeling that technical people have really screwed up here while the ones responsible for all creative aspect done really good job. The creative side is more important for me and I've enjoyed the game quite a lot despite its undeniable flaws.
Waiting to see your poem then, and you're right Simurgh would have been excellent addition to Harryhausen's gallery of monsters. I wish he head done some more Sinbad.

When it comes to video games, I too am usually more interested in the creativity than in the gameplay. XD And I'd be biased too, because like you I also love Oriental works. You might possibly enjoy reading the novel Vathek if you haven't read it already. Often considered one of the best Oriental-styled fantasy stories ever, which was a major inspiration for both Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith. The ending with the subterranean palace of fire especially is a wonder of literature.
Persian Wars sounds like the type of thing I could get into, with its wide imagination and hints at a vast, magical world! If the Necronomicon, even if not named, appears in it, then there's gotta be some freaky stuff in that world! I don't play video games like I used to anymore, but I'll no doubt watch gameplay videos to see more of the crazy stuff in it.
And I'll post it whenever it is finished! Which might not be for a while, due to other writings, but still!

I don't play much either but I might return to this one. And I felt like recommending it to you for you'd surely enjoy that oriental setting. dont know if there will be much gameplays though, I've only seen one.
