So basically the Martians figured out artificial intelligence along with interplanetary travel, walking mechs, and heavier-than-air flight... shame they were so desperate to replace their dead planet with our own, or we at the dawn of the 20th Century could have really learned from them!

Easily the greatest alien invasion story ever, and a sort of prototype of the cosmic horror genre, since it raises several ideas Lovecraft did, without all the melodrama. I strongly suggest reading it.
