Maximilian “Max” and Matilda Ridden were the children of Johnny Ridden and Kycillia Zabi. Born in UC 81, Max was the first child of the newly wedded couple and upon his birth became 4th in line for the Imperial throne behind his mother. He would spend much of his early life in relative obscurity though at the same time receiving a minor education in statecraft should he had ever ascended the throne. Max inherited much of his father’s spirit and from a young age desperately wanted to follow in his footsteps of becoming a Mobile Suit pilot. Nearly a decade after his birth, Max’s sister Matilda was born in late UC 90. Even though they differed drastically in age, it became very apparent early on that the two siblings shared an incredibly close bond with one another. When the Earth Sphere Civil War broke out in UC 95, their mother Kycillia sent them to be warded by the Hasek family on Mars, a clan of minor nobles who had been granted noble status by their grandfather Degwin Zabi in exchange that they would take part in Zeon’s early colonization efforts of the red planet. Here Max and Matilda would both continue their education while also being far away from the more intense fighting of the conflict. It was during this time that the two’s bond would grow as well. Max being the older sibling quickly found himself taking on a more parental role to his much younger sister. He would often read to her before bed, help her with school assignments, and take her out on various outings around the ReZeon capital of Arcadia. In UC 99 the two returned to the Earth Sphere, Max now 17, would enlist in the Imperial Navy and take part in the Reunification Wars while the 8 year old Matilda would do what she could at home in order to assist in the reconstruction effort of Zum City. Both siblings would earn fame during this period, Max for proving to be the equal of his father piloting a Mobile Suit during the brief Ceres War and in the campaigns to root out insurgent holdouts across the Earth Sphere. Meanwhile Matilda’s good nature and kindness towards those who had lost much in the civil war gained her much attention from the press who quickly dubbed her ‘The Angel of Zeon’ a title of which Matilda felt quite embarrassed to hold. The picture above shows the two siblings upon Max’s return from the Tokyo Campaign in UC 103, the two had barely seen each other since their return to the Earth Sphere and would live out the next two years spending as much time with one another as possible. Over the course of the first decade of the 2nd Century UC, Max would gain the attention of and be admitted into the Imperial Order of the Black Rose while Matilda would continue her education but also use her public distinction as the Angel of Zeon in order to bring issues that she came across to the attention of both the press and her cousin the Empress. With the outbreak of the Solar War, Max would fight alongside Leo Riley and other distinguished members of the Order against the assault of the Cosmo Hittites, eventually being promoted to Captain. Matilda on the other hand surprised everyone when she enlisted in the Imperial Navy and served as a Medical Officer aboard the famed Helios Class INS Imperial Sovereign during its various operations across the Earth Sphere and Inner Colonies. It was also during Matilda’s time aboard the Imperial Sovereign where she would meet the man that she would eventually go on to marry shortly after the conflict. However less than two years following the end of the Solar War, the crisis brought on by the Ash Rebellion demanded an immediate response by the Order of the Black Rose in an effort to protect the Earth from total annihilation. It was here that Maximilian Ridden would lay down his life along with many others of his fellow brothers and sisters in arms, news of his death shook Matilda to her very core as the brother she had loved so dearly had been taken from her long before his time. Her grief and tears finally dissipating after nearly a year of mourning for him alongside her father and mother. From thereon after, Matilda would carry the memory of Max with her wherever she went, vowing to look after his own child, the soldiers he commanded, and finally that when the day would come, that the two of them would be together once again.
