Protepup
Proteus Mollis
"A rather odd member of the pseudosalamander family, their amphibious skin is remarkably smooth and soft with short mammalian fur around their neck, chest, and ear areas. Most similar to the Olm, they are suspected to be a species that evolved from their original form through allopatric speciation. It is likely that there was originally 1 group of Olms, but they were separated due to a natural shift in earth's tectonic plates and ended up in a hybrid land and water cave habitat rather than the normal underwater cave habitat. This hybrid group would develop mammal-like limbs and fur, puzzling those who first found them. While still classified as a member of the Protidae family at this time, scientists are hard at work trying to figure out what caused the changes in the Protepups' genetic makeup and how to reclassify them.

Protepups retain similar facial characteristics with Olms, including regressed eyes, minuscule nostrils, small mouths with sharp teeth, and external gills. Unlike Olms they also posses canid-type ears with fur at their base. They have further advanced electro- and mechanoreceptors than Olms and share their ability to hear sound waves and shifts in the earth clearly underwater. Their eyes have more advanced photoreceptors than their aquatic counterparts though their eyes are still regressed deep under their skin. They can sense light and if put in bright sunlight may be able to make out general shapes of their surroundings (though their cavebound lifestyle means they rarely see sunlight, if at all). Their chemoreceptors are also intact at the same level as the original Olm's. They can sense chemical changes in their habitat through the use of specialized taste buds at the entrance of the gill cavities and are able to sense prey this way. Protepups rely on their inherited ability to sense weak electric fields to navigate using earth's natural magnetic field.

Being carnivorous, the diet of a Protepup consists mainly of small crabs, snails, and occasionally the eggs of cave-dwelling fish. They are not prone to starvation and have an advanced energy-storage method that allows them to live for several years without the need to eat in cases where food is not plentiful. It is suspected that Protepups live much longer than their size was thought to allow. Though they are about the length of an unsharpened pencil, new evidence suggests that they have the ability to live upwards of 80 years in their underground home. They are oviparous and lay about 1-2 eggs a season in underwater rocks. This contrasts the 70 laid by Olm females in a season, but it is suspected that due to the more mammalian physical aspects of the Protepup they follow the more mammalian aspects of birthing as well, including fewer children. Their embryonic development takes approximately 5 months. While their physical characteristics are similar to Olms, the Protepup has a diverse lifestyle that, while paralleling the Olm's, is uniquely its own. A creature that has puzzled scientists for years, there are still a lot of mysteries surrounding these odd-looking cave dwellers."

okay so this was actually a thing i made on chickensmoothie back in august of last year but i really wanted to redo them. i love love love olms and i love puppies as well. why not combine the two?
