That's a very simple background. just random bands of color in different thicknesses, so it looks like cloth, with a random pattern of "star-dots". I have some free brushes I found on the net & had been collecting & that was just gold with white on top to look like the Indian cloth with mirrors sewn onto it.

It does look simple, but you're lucky you're able to even make simple backgrounds! I didn't know you could download brushes...

The more complex the background, the harder it'll be, but simple backgrounds really aren't that hard. You can start with a complimentary color & go from there. However, when I do a portrait, I like a simple background cuz you want the subject to stand out. It really depends on what you're going for.

That was just a simple blue back ground, with tree branches added. The Sakura blossoms are a brush.

It would be kind of easy for me because I have a brush that literally makes branches, but I don't like it :u

Those tree branches are drawn in that pic. Just the flowers are a brush. Everything there is drawn. If I still drew him, I'd probably make some brushed of his kimono design, just to make things easier the next few times I draw him.
