HOLY HECK I FINALLY DID IT
The design came out a lot more colorful than I planned, haha - that's just what happens when you add a lot of details. I don't like to have too many parts of a design use the same color, I feel like it's kind of tacky, I guess? Because people in real life don't just wear one color at a time.
I had a really hard time making Nightmare look cool. I couldn't think of clothes for him to wear, so I spent some time looking at Fire Emblem characters! Then I got the idea for scale mail and this happened. I added in a lot of details that hadn't been in the sketch as I was working on the lineart and coloring.
I really hope I don't decide in a month that this design sucks, haha~ Because chances are, I will. But I might also look at it and go "this is awesome," so there.
Now I just need to think of his backstory... I kind of imagine that he's one of the many strange, unexplainable supernatural phenomena that exist in a fantasy world - an embodiment of fear who exists simply because it's not impossible. I'm just... really not good at creating scary characters. I'm not good at "oh, that's scary" scary. I'm much better at "emotionally scar you for life" scary. Like, "pay me to torture your kid" scary. But we don't talk about that. So I guess what Nightmare does is reach into your mind while you're sleeping and twist your memories into a dark, terrifying version of them, changing your thoughts, your dreams, into nightmares. makes sense, right?
I'm just thinking about the thing Nightmare said when Kirby defeats him in the Japanese version of the anime. "True to my name, I am but a dream that lives in your heart. Therefore, I am immortal. For as long as there is fear in your heart, I will someday return." I think that line really defines how I see him. Honestly, the dub kinda messed up his character. Sure, he was kind of just a typical "big bad guy" kind of character, but I do think the Japanese one was... significantly less cheesy. xD but it's really hard to find the anime's finale subbed, sooo...
