Description
Entry for the Halo 5: Guardians Fan Art Contest.I used the title of Matron for Cortana due to Matron having the connotations of a very strong mother figure, alluding to Cortana's connections with Dr Halsey, the "mother" of the Spartans.
Matron also refers to a senior nurse - one whose job is meant to heal. In a way, she did heal John in terms of helping him find his humanity. Furthermore female officers were previously known as "police matrons" along with senior officers in women's prisons sometimes also having the title of "matron", fitting with the symbolism of the Spartans within a cage in her hands.
She only wants the best for them and believes she can achieve this by placing them in a cage, both metaphorically and literally, while she 'heals' the worlds through her own methods.

Itβs sad that Cortana wasnβt immune to the logic plague that the Gravemind inflicted on her in Halo 3. Iβve yet to read the Forerunner Trilogy books by Greg Bear. I still need to get them.

Am I the only one that disliked Halo 5 Cortana?
I mean, three games of liking her, Halo 4 had me feel terrible that she was breaking at the seams, then BOOM, Benevolent Overlord Cortana makes her debut.
Killing toooons of people, and not even giving a crap.
Her reason for doing it is terrible too, "Well I know the aliens and humans are getting along, making peace, and attempting to annihilate what's left of the Covenant.Β But Screw It!Β Let's conquer everyone because LOL AI Elitism."

I agree with you. I love this picture, and I loved Halo 4 and the dynamic story with Cortana's part, and nearly cried at the end. Having her come back as a villainous evil overlord...felt like a punch in the gut. I felt betrayed.
Β Β Β The only compensation for me is that I don't think that the Cortana we see in Halo 5 is the Cortana we say good bye to in Halo 4. She said, 'Most of me is down there' before her passing...and that was the part of her holding the Chief in a hardlight shield, and creating an avatar of herself. So my theoryis that the Cortana we see in 5 is the sum of the rampant fragments that were left behind when the Mantle's Approach exploded, and that the Cortana we say goodbye to in 4 'Died' in every sense. Which actually makes things even more tearjerking...

No, I understand your dislike for her completely.
It does just kinda comes out of nowhere, but then again she has been exposed to The Domain and has information from the Precursors and Forerunners that humans might not even be able to comprehend.
I think she's just thinking about the bigger picture. Like petty squabbles between the humans, Arbiter's forces and the Covenant remnants are all just a bunch of children arguing. But she has the power, or so she thinks, to just end all conflict in the galaxy and lead the living races to a better future. Sacrifices are just part of that.
343i probably could've made her likable with different storytelling but oh well. If you dislike her then they kinda did their job in making her the new big bad haha.

There's also the whole thing where she actually talked with the Gravemind between Halo 2 and 3.
Logic Plague was capable of breaking Forerunner AI, so she didn't stand a chance.

Wow.Β That's deep.Β This piece and its description strengthen the atmosphere of the Master Chief's reunion with Cortana and give me a much better understanding of how far Cortana will go to protect the Chief and Blue Team.Β Spectacular job!
