The Chichibu Inu, Chichibu Ken o Chichibu Yaken (秩父犬) is a low content wolfdog breed native to Japan and developed from feral specimens captured in Saitama Prefecture during the 2000's.
Several sightings of unclear identification drove conservationists to locate and trap these animals, believed to be the last remnants of the extinct Honshu wolf (Canis hodophilax). After genetic testing it was determined that, while they posses a notable amount of wolf blood, these animals are the product of hybridization during the last years of the lupine species. Their reserved nature and great natural adaptability had kept a small declining population hidden from civilization until urban areas began to rapidly eat away their natural territory.
An organization was created under the name of "完全本物の日本狼犬保護団体", or KHNOI, to protect, preserve and develop this breed, and took ownership of all captured individuals. The organization has permitted several studies to be realized on their animals and a stable population has been able to settle in the last 20 years. KHNOI is now looking for breeders to further expand and work the breed and some selected bloodlines are being given away.

A standard was formalized in 2023 by known dog breeder and animal husbandry figure Arbutusridge for the occasion, and the breed is expected to start being shown in conformation shows shortly.
