recall that this isnt my drawing. i simply coloured it!
other than that ive taken a quick look through your gallery and your certainly showing talent!
what you have to do with art is practice and practice and practice..and then practice some more. The best fantasy artists have a thorough understanding of the most basic skills and ways to draw...thats the only way to get better..if your drawing a dragon, then learn how to draw a lizard...if you drawing a Predator then you need to learn how to draw the human figure correctly. Its only through a true understanding of the human figure that you will be able to then make changes to size, shape and musculature to produce a Predator. the same with Aliens and suchlike.
never underestimate the value of simply drawing something, alot of younger artists wonder why their teachers get them to draw apples or still life collections etc..but within those simple (and boring tasks) usually lays the foundations of everything you will learn....
its easy to look at some artwork on here and think WOW! thats amazing! all your seing is the end product though and not the hours and years put into learning to get to that level of skill before hand.
put in the time and effort and practice. thats all i can tell you. even if you never make it to be as good as you want to be, drawing is still fun and will always give you pleasure!

thank you, but sadly i dont have an art teacher and have had to teach myself(other than the helpful hints of artists like you)and havnt realy had an understanding of that kind of concept so its great to have someone much more experienced than myself tell something so helpful. i started drawing alien when i was going through a phase of what to do now. i drew a first one which looked good, but not very alien. of course this evolved until i just sit there in class drawing all day and quickly returning to my work when a teacher walks past. i draw the same thing all day and just grew into the fix. i never considered what you said.tankyou for this advice and know i'm grateful you took your time to teach this technique thanks heaps

if you dont have an art teacher or lesson then i suggest you pick up some books or hunt the internet out for the basics of art. learning things like shape and form, the shading techniques, lighting techniques, rendering light and dark, perspective and scale....with those under your belt then its onto the colour wheel and how to mix colours and their shades and tones; what contrasts and what blends and when to use each. There are books out there that will explain humam anatomy and how it works and fits together; hunt out Hogarths book of drawing anatomy..it might be tough to get but its one of the best. To start with dont panic about your "own style"..that will come naturally..learn the basics and everything else will flow into place....

LOL! the colouring is the easy part..like you say its imagining the the 2d turning 3d to get the shading and the light sources etc
its not that hard..in fact iw as considering producing a tutorial on it so that people can get started.

to me it isn't the easy part really XD i get frustrated at colouring sometimes, especially when i get to shading the base colouring of my drawings XD since sometimes, i can't really think of how a light source would affect or how big a shadow it'd cast on a piece of material XD
and if you would be able to produce a tutorial of that scale it'll help a lot i'm sure!
