Description This is how I make my pokeballs for my cosplay . I hope it will help someone.

Mine aren't 100% accurate, bu since I'm not very good at painting I can be proud of myself...

And I used styrofoam balls to do this. Maybe I didn't wrote this but it is the base of a pokeball....

I don't know what more to say, if you have any questions I will try to awnser the best I can . Pokeballs are very easy to do but very long to finish....

EDIT: Wow thanks for all those views! i'm happy to see that my tutorial is useful

And those are examples of what you might get when you are finished! (those pokeballs aren't mine, they belong to their respective owners):

i feel like this would be even better if you cut it in half and hollowed out the inside, maybe fill it with something heavy :3 then when you glue it back together, it'll look like it can OPEN and stuff! and it will be better for chucking if it's heavier inside

Kisshu-Neko In reply to Bramen-ramen [2011-02-28 00:50:14 +0000 UTC]

If you want your pokeball to open, I would suggest using plastic christmas balls rather than styrofoam balls. Styrofoam balls are difficult to hollow and, in my opinion, it could make them fragile. Also it would be difficult to close them back (if you want them to open and close).

Plastic christmas balls are often already cut in half and you can easily separate the two parts and close them back together. You would just have to paint the inside and put in something heavy as you say ^

thanks for the tut! making them right now, doing modge podge step! what did you use for the end varnish?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kisshu-Neko In reply to Melloki [2010-07-29 12:55:50 +0000 UTC]

I used an acrylic paint varnish

Melloki In reply to Kisshu-Neko [2010-07-29 14:10:30 +0000 UTC]

Ok good to know! I'll need to go get some then P: Also, apparently there's a new kind of Mod Podge called Hard Coat Mod Podge that's used for furniture projects etc. It dries much harder than the regular stuff and won't turn sticky if it gets wet, and has a satin finish (reading from the product site) If I see that at the store and it's cheaper than the varnish, I may try it. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Kisshu-Neko In reply to Melloki [2010-07-29 15:54:52 +0000 UTC]

Ok thank you, it may be useful for my projects too ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Melloki In reply to Kisshu-Neko [2010-07-29 17:14:39 +0000 UTC]

I'm back! I saw the Hard Coat stuff at the store, but the thing said it had a long cure time (I think a few weeks, since it's for furniture and heavy duty use items...but it would be dry before then. Just not sure if it would stand up to water before curing.) so I didn't get it. But if you had the time, it would probably be pretty useful. It was about the same price as the regular Mod Podge. Instead I just got some sealer like you suggested.

I don't think it would work for me, since I generally want to work on my projects fast, but thanks for the info ^^

This is such a cute tutorial!

So do you buy the styrofoam and shape them into balls?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Melloki In reply to redlink101 [2010-07-29 03:42:06 +0000 UTC]

Yep yep I'm trying this as well! I just bought a 6 pack of 4" diameter styrofoam balls that are the perfect size, for about $4 ish. Make sure to get the white foam and not green florists foam. That stuff is horrible!

redlink101 In reply to Melloki [2010-07-29 17:25:57 +0000 UTC]

Alrighty then! Thw white styrofoam balls, not the green ones.
Thank you muchly!

No, I just buy those styrofoam balls at a dollar store or in a craft store at less than 1$ each

So simple yet so very creative! I never would have thought of this! <3

How does it hold up? I'm planning to use them for cosplay and wonder if they could survive a bit of abuse.

Kisshu-Neko In reply to GorillaZ-CheyZilla [2010-04-07 01:13:10 +0000 UTC]

Umm... well I had them with me at a picnic, my friends where throwing them (but I don't remember much about it since it was last summer). I've also kept them in a safe place and they are still fine.

If you have time, I suggest that you add a LOT of modpodge coats. Also varnish your pokeballs to make a little more protection.

I guess that if you don't throw them in water and leave them in too hot places for a long period of time they will be fine.

And you can add some scratch at the back of the pokeball to remove it and put it on a pokeball belt. I had to put more than one piece of scratch tough.
