Description yep, actually joining in on this one. Even if SOPA's arisen in some form repeatedly for years, and thankfully the current shape of the monster's been hit with a veto threat.

because frankly, anything that essentially puts judiciary power any more in the hands of corporate interests than they already are seems like a bad idea. seeing record industry lawyers suing someone for putting up a youtube of their child dancing to a song because they hadn't paid a promotional appearances license? no.

and we've seen plenty to show us that the government doesn't pay attention to what it's doing when it seizes websites already. siezing and shutting down a CP blog? good idea. siezing the entire domain so that anyone who uses that host has their homepage say "under investigation by the department of homeland security for violations relating to abuse of children"? the merest whisper of that sort of thing can destroy small businesses or sole traders, let alone when there's an official government "we have siezed this" page.

or when a cosmetics producer had "suspicions" that web retailers were selling counterfiet goods, and checked three of the 27 they "had suspicions" about, this was enough for all 27 to be seized?

the lawmakers need to get more understanding about how the god damned internet WORKS before they start trying to make more laws controlling it. and remember that they're for the best interests of ALL the people.

General rule of thumb, Kite. If it crosses political boundaries in terms of agreement, it's usually a bad idea.

That's why this monster isn't going to really work. At all.

well, no, it isn't going to work because anyone with a modicum of technical knowledge can easily set a bypass to completely ignore the proposed methodologies of SOPA/PIPA in their hosts file on a windows machine, i know there's an equivalent linux/unix file which may or may not be called "hosts" as well, you can do it on android systems, you can even do it on SYMBIAN systems, and if there isn't such a file accessible to mac users it's one more reason for me to laugh at apple, which i do regularly.
