Description
(from ages 13-17)I love these things and have seen a few scattered around the DevART community. Each one is so interesting to look at and see how those artists you always admired used to draw and the improvements they have made through their own hard work and determination. Some make more progress than others, but no where can you see this better than when the evidence is side-by-side.
Some how it makes them seem more human when you can see that those artists werent always perfect and evidence that everyone had to start at the beginning no matter how good they are. Hopefully, this will inspire you all who see it to keep trying and practicing because no matter how far away that goal seems you can reach it with a little time. I know Im not perfect, and I definitely know that I didnt start out drawing masterpieces (heck I dont even do that now). Just like everyone else I just drew and studied and drew and studied until finally I reached heights I never would have thought I would achieve just a few years ago.
Personally I think the progress I have made in just 5 years is astounding. I myself cant believe it even though I remember drawing (and loving) each and every one of these pictures at some point. Now I am really embarrassed by some of the ones near the top.

Here are a few tips of the trade that I have found to improving, in case anyone wants to know my secrets *snort*:
I suggest everyone make a chart of your progress too. Save all of the pictures you draw even if you don’t like them so that you can have something to compare to later. It will give you a real confidence boost and inspire yourself to continue on the same path. Even though Im not improving at the same rate as I was a few years previously, I am making small baby steps and with each one I learn more about art and myself.
So what do you think?

I love seeing these on DA, it's so much fun to see how artists have evolved over the years. I can't wait to see how you improve again in the next few years.

Wow! You're an inspiration to us all! It's easy to say that practise makes perfet, but seeing it makes it muh more believable.
By the way, you said that you learned through tutorials here on DA, I'm (very) new to PS and am wondering if there are any you would care to recommend?

Aww thank you. ^^ That makes me really happy.
I would love to share some tutorials. I actually have so many that it would probably be easier if you could tell me something more specific you want to learn (using the pen tool, coloring hair, cel-style shading, filters, etc) so I can narrow it down.

That would be bery nice, thank you
I realise that style vary from one person to another, but something with anatomy, preferable hands, feet and perhaps the body from different perspectives. Also, I'm new to the whole colouring thing, so perhaps something about light/ highlight and shades, even colouring in general. Backgrounds would be nice too, but no need to stress yourself if you don't know of one.
Gee, I just ramble on, don't I? ^^ Perhaps I should also tell you that my Photoshop just crashed, but I have Open canvas too and that's what I'm using now. Just thought I should mention that in case there where any major differences that I have yet to discover.
It's very sweet of you to find the time to help me, once again, thanks. ^^

Hmmm lets see what I can do...
Heres a gallery with different tutorials on lots of different things but pay special attention to the human anatomy ones which are really detailed:

Hand, foot, and a few other misc tutorials:

Interesting and informative tutorial on drawing dynamic figures:

If you want to work on backgrounds, textures, lighting, etc I would suggest looking through this persons gallery and checking out his really informative tutorials on some of the basics:

I think it is really important for a beginner to learn how to use the pen tool especially until you get used to drawing free hand lineart or if you dont have a tablet:

Some basic shading styles, but I would suggest looking up each specific one you are interested in on the dA tutorial-category search:

Here is a basic photoshop guideline which explains some of the main features:

Unfortunately Ive only used OC briefly about a year ago and I know it is a little different but I honestly havn't found any good tutorials I would recommend for it yet. Hopefully you can apply some of what you may learn from the PS ones to OC also.

wow. you've made serious progress since 2003. I have some craptastic drawings from middleschool up in my room. I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to post those on the internet though. (soooo aweful...and to think how proud I was of them at the time....*dies* ) I think I might try the redo thing though. That could be fun.

I thought so also but its good for other artists to see what you have done in the past and for people like myself it always gives me hope to see them too. And its really fun and a the best test of progress in my opinion to redraw the same picture since you can clearly compare specific details and style changes... highly recommended ^^

Man do I have a long road 2 travel before I can get even half as good as you are right now!
I stopped drawing for a some time, But I think I've found my way back to it again. Once again you inspired me even more.
Thanks for all your tips and "secrets" o(n_~)o

Erm... so I pretty much think you're an art god now. D:
You've improved so much in so little time! It's just amazing... almost like Photoshop was made for you. I really love seeing things like this- it helps helps artist associate with each other and learn the different processes of artistic improvement.
Great job with the presentation- now I wanna make one. XD

art god!? thats crazy!.... undeserved of course although still flattering lol
ahhh Photohop we WERE made for each other... I would marry it but alas the love cannot be
Computer graphics is where I belong more than traditional art always. That was my missing link a few years ago and once I got it I was able to use it like pro (well maybe not that good... Im not even a pro now) within a few short months, or at least compared to everyone else who tried using it and seem to have such a hard time.
See you understand where Im coming from with this too. These charts are like windows into the past and help you get to know an artist on a deeper level and understand the the way their mind works really. I would love to see you do one too. I have no idea what your art used to look like either. ^^

Haha, just wait a few more years. Household name, maybe? (at least to the anime and manga lovers, lol)
Ahaha! Really! The same applies to me... I just can't work in traditional media as well as I can in digital. Even my concentration in AP 3D Art is "Digital Forms in the 3D Plane" which shows how stubborn I am in regards to what doing digital art and improving on it. ^^
But, it took me waaaaaaay longer than you to get a hang of it. I'm improving rapidly with it now, creating my own brush sets and paterns and making entire pictures with vectors, but I started out slow. Looking at your progress, it amazes me how quickly you got used to using it!
Aye, I'll definately do this then.
Seems like it'd be fun and embarassing too. ^^

I'd really like to help but I've got nothing to say really unless you get into pixeling. I've gotten a good hold on it. I even did my first big project a few days ago - aka, jumping on the pixel id bandwagon. Anyways, I hope to be anywhere near as great as you sometime.
