Most human figure tutorials show the males with the biggest muscles as possible and some other...stuff for both genders that people think are "gross" and its so gross I practice drawing it and blah blah blah, but this tutorial isn't the case, I especially like your style too.

Just curious, but in your high school career, did you take art classes or anatomy classes to gain your artistic abilities? Or are you just one of those gifted 'look and learn' types?

There are two more important differences:

1. The male rib cage is broader than the female rib cage.
2. The female pelvic bone is bigger than the male pelvic bone. Probably for the child birth functionality of the female.

These two differences bring out very prominent and obvious shape differences between the male and female. The smaller rib cage and larger pelvic bone is what give the female body the pleasing curves. As a result of the rib cage being smaller, the female arms are closer to the body at the upper arm and fan out from the elbow because of the larger pelvic bone.

It's just the opposite for men.

Just an FYI for those who didn't know and are interested. Thank you for the clear tutorial. Appreciate it.

NormalFatality In reply to ??? [2009-09-17 04:20:27 +0000 UTC]

Wow...I have a question. What's the length of the arms to the legs? Is one shorter than the other? I've heard that some people are naturally square but that's not always saying they have the same length in arms AND legs, just that the width of their torso plus the length of both arms is the same as their height. O,o

Also, great tutorial! This is pretty nice stuff, you got here! I'll definitely have to doodle some random body parts. xD (Hope my parents don't think I'm going nuts. lol)

hazelthewolf In reply to NormalFatality [2009-09-23 02:42:44 +0000 UTC]

The legs are generally longer. The way I think about it is this: The thigh bone is the longest bone in the body, so, while keeping that in mind, I make sure that there's no limb longer than the thighs, so the arms shouldn't be longer than the legs.
-Keep in mind that arms aren't DRAMATICALLY shorter than the legs. Only a little bit. Hope this helped some.

NormalFatality In reply to hazelthewolf [2009-09-23 04:12:01 +0000 UTC]

Very much so! And...does that mean that should you touch your toes with your arms, that the rest of the body should be straight to see the length difference? I have most of your tutorials saved, but there isn't really one on this, and this is what's been bugging me the most. :/

But what you did tell me helps a lot! C: Thank you!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hazelthewolf In reply to NormalFatality [2009-09-23 04:19:51 +0000 UTC]

Yes, the body needs to be standing straight up to see the big difference in the arm and leg length. :]

I'm glad I helped. c:

BldyMalice In reply to ??? [2009-09-01 02:32:23 +0000 UTC]

This is... the best figure tutorial I think I have ever found! It's perfect for my level, because I know the basics, but it's details that need refining - what little details create the lines you always see in drawings. The only thing I could ask for from you is do you have anything on hips? If you could link me, even if it's just a pose-practice sheet with the different areas of motion of the hips, I would be so very, very grateful!

Hips and how they attach to the thighs are probably the only thing I'm seriously lagging behind in, and I think it's about time to try and catch it up.

Thank you so much for this, and for simply taking the time to read this, if you did.~

(if not, no hard feelings - I'm rambly and I understand people are busy. :V )
