Didn't really know what to do with this shot. B&W seemed to give it something, not entirely sure what though. Perhaps it really belongs in scraps

I see why it feels like there should be more to it, but somehow it lacks interest, while still having a little bit of promise.
I think it comes down to the composition just being wrong.

Not sure about that. I tried a few crops, nothing satisfied. Perhaps it's just not an exciting subject, and/or I lack the skill to bring something good out of it

The background doesn't give enough contrast, I think.

Nope, that's the whole frame you see there. You might be right about the bg, which would explain why none of the crops seemed to help.
I've also been thinking that those out of focus sticks in front of the subject tree distract the eye considerably. If they weren't there the image would be a cleaner one.
