Description Not a fanart this time, just from imagination This has a lot of the things I like to draw: Nature, cliffs with sedimentary layers, and unusual buildings!

Helpful criticism appreciated, I might as well improve on it since I've spent so much time on it already ; )

Anyway, did you see the amazing trailer for The Martian? (Be warned, it features some big spoilers if you haven't read the book)Β

so cool, looks like it would be really fun to explore this place. Also I like the ligthing here, the way the last rays of sun hits the cliffs is very lifelike have not seen the trailer, think I'll just see the movie, that way the trailer wont spoil me, maybe it shows up on tv though!

The subject and composition is beautiful. I absolutely love the detail in lighting on the cliffs-- it really makes it come to life.

there are a few notes I think I'd like to make, however.
The clouds are a bit flat and I think it'd make it much better with some colorful highlights like this:
news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images…
not as dramatic, maybe, but I think it's really help the atmosphere and mood of the piece!

Another note: the lineart.
I feel like a lot of it is too thick and cheapens it and can be distracting. I think that you're using lineart to show different depth planes, right? I think you should also use smaller lines to show detail-- for example all of the detail in the cliff walls. The thick, black lines can distract a bit from the focal points. I think if you made them smaller and possibly changed them to a more brown or orange color it would really help.
The straight-up black of the lines threw me off a bit too. In the shadowed areas it looks fine and on the grey of the building it looks great, but on grass texture it seems too blunt. I can see that you might have colored the lineart in some areas (top window on building has purple lines, which looks great) but the rest of the piece doesn't. If you make the lines on the vegetation more of a deep green and maybe even making highlights out of some of the lines (like at the very top of the grass on the building) would really show off the color.

The coloring of the vegetation bothers me a bit, too. I think you used only two base colors for the grass and trees, which makes it look like there is only one species of grass and one species of tree in the entire jungle. I would try splashing in a few different shades of green in the trees and some patches of grass, too.
wallpaperswa.com/thumbnails/de…

and to nitpick, what are the circles in some of the grass?? Mushrooms? Flowers? Stones? Or something else?

Besides my notes, though, I really do love this picture-- the scenery and perspective and lighting and architecture and the contrast between the jungle and modern lab looks amazing.

If I've made a mistake or if some parts aren't clear, feel free to tell me!
I hope this helps!

Hey, thanks! And thanks for the critique!
I think my problem is, I start out doing a cartoony linedrawing, but then I want to add fancy/realistic lighting and color, and then the lineart doesn't work anymore.
I colored the lines of the clouds and background so it would look further away, but I should probably go over some other areas as well.

And yep, you're right about colorvariation in the vegetation. I'll add some of that, except in the background because of atmosphere and stuff.

While drawing, I thought of the circles as flowers, but I made them a bit more like mushrooms now : )

Stylized/cartoony stuff is very subjective, so hard to critique, plus it's mostly sketches! Maybe work on putting the characters in different environments instead of white backgrounds, and attempts at realism (when I try that, I learn a lot that can be used in my stylized/cartoony stuff too)

Yeah, yeah!

I had actually been put on a break from my digital colorer thing and it's defiantly made me appreciate how forgiving and simple a medium digital is. Once I can get my digital program back, I'm going to put a background into everything, especially with your encouragement :'D

Oh this is beautiful, I love how you used the linework and colors to show depth, and all the detail to the building and surroundings themselves, I'm in love!

Although, if I were to change anything about this, I would think about the furthest lines (on the cliffs and treetrunks) could be a lighter color, the same way the colors themselves become a little more faded from the atmospheric perspective. Also, the mushrooms all have the same amount of detail, even though some are in the foreground and some are in the middle ground; I think either adding designs or just changing the shapes of a few would help to make it more believable that some are closer and further away than each other. Other than that, there isn't anything else that would really need to be changed in my opinion!

I honestly didn't realize they were making a film for The Martian; I actually bought the book just recently without knowing what it was about haha! I was buying the rest of Gillian Flynn's books (since I had already read Gone Girl), and Barnes and Noble was having a "buy 2, get 1 free" deal so I just picked a random book from the eligible list. I'll probably get to reading it soon so I can so I can watch the trailer

Thank you!
And thanks for the suggestions, I totally agree about the mushrooms and the lines of the cliffs with trees in the background! I think it's better now, added some details in the front and faded some lines in the back.
I loved the book, it's an incredibly well researched sci-fi set in the near future! But the less spoilers you get the better, so just start at the first page! : )
