Simple model done in Zbrush, UV-mapping and hairstyling ("furstyling..?") took most of the time, done in 3ds max.

Cool^^ I think I'll recommend Sculptris in particular. It's a bit like sculpting out of clay, good for creatures like this. (It's a very lightweight version of Zbrush, which many professionals use)
