The hope of finding water made the two cats hurry on their run across the field. As Lattè said, they had to pass an abandoned twoleg nest. Brambleclaw ordered his companion to quicken up when he caught the disgusting scent of rat coming from the place. She'd been in enough trouble as it was, if she weren't to get bitten by a stinking rat as well.
"That must be the gorge, see how the field ends up there!" Squirrelflight said, and she sped ahead of Brambleclaw.
As their speed slowed, Brambleclaw caught another smell in the area. Cat, as they'd been warned of. He stopped, trying to locate where the scent came from, and sniffed near a bush.
"A border marker?" he spoke to himself. Then Squirrelflight's voice broke into his thoughts.
"Brambleclaw, over here," she whispered, and her tail flicked urgently. Her voice bore traces of shock, and he began wondering what she'd spotted, as he padded towards her.
Squirrelflight's pupils were wide, and she was obviously stunned out of her mind. And when he followed her gaze, he understood why.
First things first, the gorge was enormous, easily three times the size of their camp at home. But that wasn't the biggest surprise of all.
Below, between rocks and caves and clumps of forest, cats were buzzing to and fro. It was like a clan...
"By StarClan," Squirrelflight mumbled.
Brambleclaw nodded, and then his ears caught the noise of a twig cracking.
"Intruders!"
