Description AN note: Sorry it took like a year, but it's here. Happy valentines day guys, this is my present to you all :3

************************************************************************************

Phil enjoyed nothing more than being able to just sit back and get lost in a book. He was normally far too busy to read with work and then coming home to do house work, but on his days off he liked to kick off his shoes and get his head stuck in a good book. If it was some sappy romance or even a high tension adventure, he liked to just get lost in a world he didn’t belong to.

It was one of those days that he found himself engrossed in a particularly excellent book that he thought he heard his name being called. He’d been completely thrown off his place in reading as he’d looked around the room slightly panicked. He had been more startled than he was actually worried something was going on. He shrugged it off as him hearing things and went back to reading. But then he heard it again.

“Phil. Come here, quickly!”

It wasn’t that Phil was worried hearing Dan shouting for him. It more just made him feel uneasy as he set his book down on the bed beside him and made a quick dash for the stairs. From the sound of Dan’s voice, he could tell the boy wasn’t in distress or anything so he wasn’t exactly sure why Dan would even be calling to him. Dan did like to get himself in a state over silly things sometimes, and although Phil knew it was probably something really trivial that was wrong, he still kept up his pace as he covered the last few metres from the stairs to the living room.

As Phil entered the room he was met by a very excited looking Dan who was grinning for ear to ear as he half looked out the window. As he spotted Phil his smile grew even more, taking the few steps it took for him to get over to the older man before gently tugging on Phil’s arm and leading him over to the window like a child would.

“It’s snowing! Like it’s actually snowing in December” Dan grinned excitedly as he pretty much pressed his face up against the glass to watch the delicate snowflakes fall. “The weather said it might snow, but I didn’t think it would actually happen”

Phil couldn’t help but smile as he watched the younger boy’s eyes dart excitedly from one snowflake to another as they fell in hundreds simultaneously. This was one of the reasons why Phil liked Dan so much. The fact that he always seemed so guarded and mature but when he was excited, he was still such a little kid. There were only a few things that could get him this excited and now Phil had snow to add that list of things.

“It’s really coming down out there, isn’t it?” Phil asked as he took a step forward, placing his hand on the widow as he leaned against it slightly to get a better look at what was slowly becoming a winter wonderland. “I guess you like snow then?”

“It’s my favourite type of weather. I mean, who doesn’t like snow?” Dan replied, turning his attention to Phil fully for the first time since he’d entered the room. He now had a small smile on his face, still obviously excited by the snow.

“Any particular reason?”

Dan’s smile faltered for a second before it returned looking a little less happy than before “I guess it holds a lot of memories” he said, looking back to the snow before continuing to talk “Remember that one year when it snowed on Christmas eve and everyone got really excited that we’d have a white Christmas?  Well my mum decided to take me ice skating on the big outdoor ice rink they have for Christmas break in the square. It was almost magical. I don’t know if I can even describe it but it was just so amazing to be skating while it was snowing and-”

Phil was so caught up in Dan’s story that he didn’t notice the brown haired boy had stopped talking. He looked to Dan, a small frown taking over his features as he noticed the boy’s tear stained reflection in the window.

“It’s hard to remember…isn’t it? Even when it’s happy thoughts” Phil asked softly, gently laying his hand on Dan’s shoulders since he didn’t feel this was exactly a moment he should hug Dan. Dan seemed happy enough with the small gesture of affection, and just stared out at the snow as a few tears trickled down his face. Phil could tell they weren’t exactly tears of sadness or happiness. Just tears of pain that came with shattered dreams and memories.

Dan just nodded, staring out at the white world outside as all those happy memories of playing outside with his mum in the snow came back to him. It was then that he realised a harsh truth that he’d never had to think about before. A truth that he didn’t want to think about but now that it was in his head he couldn’t block it out.

“What if that was the last time I’ll ever get to ice skate with her…”

********************************************************************

Ever since Dan’s little melt down regarding his mum, Phil and John had made it their duty to keep an eye on him. Phil first expressed his concern when he’d found Dan crying in his room at some unearthly hour in the morning asking her to come back because he needed her. Dan of course didn’t have the heart to tell Phil that this was a pretty frequent occurrence and that he really was fine. But Dan’s father also seemed to think that there was something wrong with his son, so he agreed to spend a lot more time with Dan. Not only so he could keep an eye on the boy, but also to try fix their pretty much broken relationship.

They took turns -shifts if you would- spending time with the younger boy and making sure he remained happy. Their schedule basically revolved around their work and since of course John worked for Phil that wasn’t hard to work around.

So of course it took Dan by surprise when Phil turned up at their house slightly out of breath with what Dan could see was a happy smile plastered on his face. John also seemed surprised. He even went to the effort of switching the TV off as Phil walked into the room. They may have been some sort of friends because of this agreement but yet they still seemed to have such a work environment relationship. John saw Phil as his boss at all times no matter what the circumstances. Maybe that was just part of their friendship though. Dan would never really know or understand.

“Phil, what are you doing here?” John asked as he stood up. Dan did the same for some reason, not sure why he felt the need to stand when it was only Phil standing before him.

“Can I borrow Dan for a while?”

John looked confused at first, probably wondering why Phil had taken time out of his working day to come back here to take Dan for whatever he wanted to do. “Um, yeah. Sure” he paused, looking back at his son “That okay with you?”

Dan looked between the two older men his eyes settling on Phil’s smile before he nodded. “Sure, I guess”

“Great, I think you’ll enjoy yourself”

“Will I?” Dan asked raising his eyebrow in more of a playful way than anything else. Phil just smiled and nodded, holding out his hand as if he actually expecting Dan to take it. Something crossed his face as he remembered that although things were going well they weren’t going fantastically and he still needed to watch what he was doing. He knew if he did one thing to make Dan uncomfortable this could go back to square one and everything that they’d been through so far could be lost.

Dan didn’t know why he felt so terrible seeing Phil look at him that way, but he did. So he reached out and took Phil’s hand, giving it a soft squeeze as if to say he didn’t need to worry. Both Phil and John looked quite shocked but, Phil managed to hide it better. He smiled softly back at Dan as he returned the gentle squeeze.

“Come on, lets go”

*********************************************************************

“Okay, just take one more step and- hold on”

Dan felt a small smile spread across his face as Phil tried to keep his eyes covered with one hand and move him to where he was supposed to be with the other. He did want to point out that he could move himself if Phil didn’t demand that he kept his eyes closed, but he wasn‘t feeling that mean today. Apparently whatever Phil was planning was a surprise and Dan wasn’t allowed to have a single peek at it.

“Okay, we’re here. You can open your eyes now” Phil said softly, removing his hand from covering Dan’s eyes.

Dan opened his eyes, his smile growing as he saw what was in front of him. At first, he couldn’t believe Phil had done this. He didn’t think Phil had actually been listening the other day, but this definitely proved he was.

“So, what do you think?”

“It’s…incredibly” Dan said hardly above a whisper as he watched the happy families and couples glide by across the almost glistening ice. He had had such fun last time that he was here that he had almost forgotten the happiness and beauty ice rinks could make him feel. Indoor ones were okay he guessed, but outside ones just had so much beauty thanks to the fact they were simply outside. The tree’s and lights just added to the beauty of it all and made him feel such awe and joy.

“So” Phil began, leaning slightly closer to Dan with a gentle smile on his face “What are we waiting for?”

******************************************************************

As they skated, Dan felt alive. He felt as though all his troubles were a distant memory and he could fly away form it all. He loved the way it felt to glide across the ice the way he did. The way that nothing else mattered in that moment apart form the fact he was skating on ice just like he’d done with his mum as a small child.

And then he had stopped, his eyes staring at the middle of the rink where a beautiful memory he treasured played out in front of him. He’d been twelve when his mum had bought him here that Christmas eve and they had pretty much the whole rink to themselves. Everybody else had been in their houses preparing for the arrival of dear Santa or just simply spending time together. Of course John had been out somewhere so he wasn’t invited along to the magical evening they were about to have.

Dan had skated around happily, still a little uneasy on his feet as his mum skated beside him. He remembered particularly when she’d moved to the centre of the rink and performed a perfect lay back spin. Dan had meant to keep skating and then tell her how cool she looked, but instead he was stuck in place, just watching something so elegant and beautiful it honestly nearly bought tears to his eyes.

When she’d stopped, she’d looked at him and smiled sweetly in the classic mum sort of way she always did. Dan of course skated up to her as fast as he could, nearly tripping over his own feet with the excitement. She held her hands out to him, catching his as he came to a stumbled stop in her arms.

“That was so cool mum, it looked so beautiful”

No normal boy Dan’s age would say something so sappy but he couldn’t help it. He was a total mummy’s boy and loved his mum more than anything in the world. He also loved ice skating probably just as much so putting the two together made him incredibly happy and just filled him up with this joy he couldn’t explain.

“Was it really? I’m quite out of practice” she had replied with that same gentle smile still present. She’d done ice skating lessons from the age of twelve and was even good enough to be in competitions all over the world. She’d loved it with a passion and Dan supposed that’s where his enthusiasm for it came from. Of course when she’d met Dan’s dad, she’d settled down and decided that she was getting too old for all of that kid stuff anyway. She was the perfect mother and Dan couldn’t ask for anyone better, but he had secretly wished she’d at least kept ice skating regularly so he could watch her.

“No way, it was perfect” Dan said still in awe and she just simply laughed at her son and ruffled his slightly curly hair.

“Well I guess I’ll just have to teach you how to do it if you like it so much”

“You’d teach me, really?” Dan nearly shouted as his excitement rose greatly. She just nodded, taking a hold of his hands and backing off just slightly.

“If you can spin holding onto me, you can do it yourself” she had said, moving her foot slightly and making them turn ever so slowly. Dan stared at his feet, worrying he was standing wrong or that if he moved the wrong way he would fall and make a fool of himself.

“If you look at your feet, you’re going to fall. Come on, look at me”

Dan did as he was told, looking up at his mum and somehow seeing her gentle smile calmed his nerves and made him feel like he was floating. They moved smoothly around in a circle, her squeezing his hands as she saw the happy smile spread across her son’s face.

Dan truly had never been happier than he had in that moment. Skating with his mum was such a gift and being able to do it on Christmas eve just seemed almost magical.

Suddenly Dan was brought back to reality by Phil skating up to him with an incredible amount of grace and looking into his eyes with a spark of curiosity shinning there.

“What were you looking at?”

Dan just shrugged him off but couldn’t stop a small smile making an appearance “Just a memory”

“Was it a good memory?” Phil fired back almost immediately, obviously realising what kind of memories doing something like this could bring back Dan.

Dan thought for a second before nodding “Yeah, a really good one actually”

Phil looked like he was about to say something and by the older boys stance Dan could tell it was going to be something either incredibly profound or important to him. Dan decided he didn’t want this to be ruined by anything silly or trivial since Phil had an incredibly bad habit of ruining moments by saying the wrong thing.

“Look, Phil-”

“Yeah?” Phil replied just as quickly as before as he obviously thought Dan had something important to say.

Dan then realised he had no idea what he was going to say. Well, he kind of did but he didn’t want to embarrass himself. This place held such happy memories that he didn’t want to say something stupid and replace that happy memory with a bad one.

“Well, um”

Phil smiled then, his hand moving up to his face to stroke the slight stubble that was staring to form “Is it about how I didn’t shave? It looks rubbish I know” he said almost jokingly as if he obviously knew that wasn’t what Dan had wanted to say at all. All though it was stupid and really pointless Dan still found himself laughing a little.

“No, it’s not- it’s just-”

“I can go shave it off in the bathroom if I’m that unattractive to you now”

Dan properly laughed this time, giving Phil a gentle shove as he watched Phil’s smile grow.

“Shut up. You know, it actually looks kind of nice”

“Oh? So you’re into it are you?”

“No” Dan tried to say between his short little laughs as he reached out to take a hold of Phil’s arm. He did it to mostly steady himself so he wouldn’t fall but also to actually get his husband’s attention.

“I just wanted to say…” he hesitated, looking properly into Phil’s eyes then and seeing those soft blue eyes staring right back at him “Thank you, Phil. This means a lot to me”

Phil almost grinned at Dan’s words, looking like an excited child who had been given huge praise form a parent. He gently took Dan’s hand in his, looking at their joined hands for a second before looking back into the younger boys eyes.

“Come here, Dan” he said barely above a whisper, letting go of Dan’s hand and pulling him closer. Dan let him, enjoying the feeling of Phil’s arms wrapped around him in a gentle but firm hug.

Everything felt perfect in that moment and for a moment he thought maybe this could be another happy memory of this place that he could look back at and smile. His mum may never come back here with him, but he had the memories and that was enough to hopefully keep him going.

He was broken out of his thoughts as he felt something wet touch his cheek. He opened his eyes that he hadn’t even realised he’d closed and pulled away from Phil to look at the sky. And sure enough, it was snowing. It was only light but it was still snow.

He looked at Phil excitedly and received that same perfect smile back from the older man.

“It really is a winter wonderland now” Phil said with a small laugh as he watched the excitement twinkle in Dan’s deep brown eyes. Dan just nodded, his mouth falling open just slightly in awe as he looked up at the falling snow.

Dan has never looked so perfect to Phil in that moment. He looked truly content, even happy as he watched the thousands of tiny snowflakes make their way down to earth. He looked so pretty, his cheeks flushed and eyes glassy and before Phil even knew what he was doing he was kissing him.

Dan was a little surprised by the sudden kiss from Phil but found he really didn’t mind at all and slowly kissed him back. It was truly magical then, the snow flowing around them like something from a fairytale as they stood there wrapped in each others arms.

Dan suddenly started to wonder then, what if Phil really could be that prince charming he’d been waiting so long for.
