Description
Acrylics on canvas board primed with gesso31cm x 44cm
The textures are from a previous painting. I couldn't get it right, so I applied a layer of gesso and started from scratch.

Thanks! Texture is something I'm very much into right now.

wow, your title is incredibly apt. this painting really does feel icy freezing cold. i worry about what you must have been thinking when you painted. it looks like turmoil and an emotional shut down because of something that's frightening you. the texture is really cool. i have a few that look a bit like that. the colors are so perfect and you've just done the whole thing soo well. i want to look at it and look at it, but it makes me feel a little panicky. i see that as a good thing for the painting, it's having a powerful effect on me. i'm pretty sure you were not doing well when you painted it. it doesn't look like the kind of thing i'd say was beautiful. i think powerful and dramatic and effective and that it portrays what (i think) you were feeling. it certainly moves me, and in ways i'm not really sure about. very good work!

Thanks again for your insightful comments. Like "Cataclysm", this painting just lay around for almost two months, and I just couldn't figure out what to do with it. I was so frustrated! I tried many different colours, shapes, etc. Then I just thought, screw it, I'll apply gesso over the whole damn thing and start again from scratch (though the textures still showed through so it wasn't completely from scratch). After I'd done that and the gesso was dry, I finished the painting in 30 minutes or so. My foremost feeling at the time was relief because I was finally done with it.
I think your emotional shutdown theory might be closer to the truth than I'd like... The fact that I finished this so spontaneously and quickly could be a sign that it has an intense emotional content. But right now, I just can't figure out what it is. Something is hidden in the painting but what...? No wonder it makes you feel uneasy.
This painting appeals to me strongly, that's for sure.
