She only allowed herself to think about it at night.

When the night was pitch black and the only sign of life outside their den was the morrow calling of an owl far away.

She'd turn around and rest her head against her sister, feeling Toshala's heartbeat against her cheek.

At least it didn't take you.

It was a cursed thought, she knew.
Though meant purely out of gratitude, it was also selfish. Mean.

Somebody had lost a daughter. Brother. Cousin. Niece.

And they did not deserve it. No more than she did.

But oh, in the chill air of the night, when the owl would turn their head to the dancing wisps,

and the moonlight would glitter against the trickling stream,

she'd release that silent prayer of gratitude to linger in the air

like their collective breath against the earthy walls around them.
