Description The Kirsten Beyer books detailing the Full Circle project allude to a second generation of Intrepid class starships, with Voyager being refitted to this level. To me, this seemed a good opportunity to "fix" the Intrepid class and make it look a little more integrated.
This is now my forth version of an Intrepid Refit, the last iteration was the "Flight II" and when I declared her finished I admitted that there were a few things that I would have done differently. Well I've done her differently. I've made changes to bring her in line with the rest of my "slipstream fleet" plus alterations to the deflector, impulse drive and numerous other detail changes.
I may update her again in the future, for some reason I was unable to apply a bump map, but for now I'm declaring her done... again... for now.

The longer nacelles really suit to the Intrepid.

I'm usually not a fan of oversized nacelles and i prefer shorter, more bulky ones in general. But here it looks absolutley gorgeous.

Awesome. But, no more delta-wing under the main section?!Β  I detested those old moving engine pylons.

Thank you. And nope, the Aeroshuttle was removed in favour of a wider shuttlebay (or rather, bigger doors). My view is that it's a bit of a silly idea as you are left with a gaping hole in your ship if you crash the shuttle.

It wasn't something I considered. However, if I recall, the technology was added on in relatively short order without a spacedock, so I don't see why it couldn't be used.

I've just found your "Between the Stars" site and I compliment you on your writing. I've only skimmed a few of the shorter pieces so far but you are very good at capturing the essence of existing characters. I will be making the time to read more.

Amazing looking ship but could have been a new class instead of an Intrepid but it's still cool

I suppose it could have been a new class, but this was designed specifically as a refit as per the books.
If you are looking for a completely new Intrepid-esque type ship, I recommend the Vivace class by DJ Cutis.

Now this is a refit I could get behind. There's only one thing missing - the impulse engines. Unless you've moved them and I just can't figure out where you put them. The original Intrepid has them on the nacelle pylons just before the hinge.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kjc733 In reply to CamSPD [2018-12-29 10:59:42 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. The main impulse engines are now on the underside of the saucer blended into an extended ventral bulge. There are still some smaller secondary exhausts on the pylons - the glows are visible on the aft view. This was because I was originally going to try and incorporate the Saucer Separation capability described in the Full Circle novels.

Animal1973 [2018-12-22 00:00:34 +0000 UTC]

I like it. I am sure the engineers are happier with a pylon system that does not move. I have a question. Does the Intrepid class also have the ability to do a saucer separation? In addition any drawings that layout any updates to the bridge? Excellent work !!!Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kjc733 In reply to Animal1973 [2018-12-22 08:32:53 +0000 UTC]

There is no on screen evidence of saucer separation, however one of the Full Circle novels does make use of the capability. For my Flight II I included a separation line on the textures and envisaged a Sovereign style separation plane, but given the integrated nature of the hull and the small size of the ship I didn't bother on my Flight III.
As for the bridge, I never liked it on Voyager. It's got so much wasted space and is an awkward layout. I'd love to remake it but I don't think my skills are good enough to make a good job of it. Plus there's never enough time!

I actually liked the Intrepid bridge. It wasn't crowded, which I liked. Any of the other bridges you think would work better?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kjc733 In reply to CamSPD [2018-12-30 17:54:16 +0000 UTC]

My problem with the Intrepid class is that it's too spread out for a small number of people. It's a command centre, the Captain needs to be able to see what's going on in an instant and to be able to hear the crew. Not strain over her shoulder or walk halfway around the bridge to find out whats going on. I have a similar problem with the Enterprise D bridge, but at least the Captains chair could turn - not that it matters as on the E-D the captain can't even see the science stations through that ridiculous tactical rail.
The original (and TMP era) bridges were far more functional. The captain just had to swivel the chair and could have a one on one conversation, or could see what the crewman was actually doing.
For a modern "functional" bridge I actually like the Prometheus. The captain is again in the centre of everything and I like the touch of the helm station being lower so that the captain can see the viewscreen unobstructed over it.

CamSPD In reply to kjc733 [2019-09-19 13:49:39 +0000 UTC]

I get what you're saying about the bridge. That's one reason why I "fixed" that problem with this bridge alteration:Β

The command chair swivels just like the one on the Defiant-class. And really, I think the Voyager bridge set looks bigger than it's meant to. Camera angles maybe?Β

kjc733 In reply to CamSPD [2019-09-25 18:29:07 +0000 UTC]

You may be right about the camera angles.
I like that remodel. What did you use to put it together?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CamSPD In reply to kjc733 [2019-09-29 05:23:49 +0000 UTC]

I used the Intrepid bridge, Ent-D battle bridge, Defiant bridge, and a Steamrunner MSD as sources. All the bridge pics I used were from Ex Astris Scientia. The modification was done with Photoshop CS3.

Nice! I love the new sleeker profile, though the nacelles would work better if they weren't at an angle (between that and the taper, it makes them look like they're angling up and outwards to the sides the further back they go...).Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kjc733 In reply to Tophertron [2018-12-18 18:57:01 +0000 UTC]

That was the original intent but it makes it more regimented and takes away the flow of the design (you'd be surprised). Whilst from the top the tilted nacelles do give that outwards tilt impression, from every other angle the tilted nacelles look better (in my opinion).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Tophertron In reply to kjc733 [2018-12-19 00:50:47 +0000 UTC]

I was looking at both the side profile and dorsal views; in both (to me at least) they look incorrectly flared.Β  From a Treknical nitpicking view, also (and one reason why I dislike Voyager's swinging Nacelles!) the warp field emitters should really be pointing at each other, as was intended from TMP onwards.Β  How and why they managed to forget that as of Voyager/DS9 onwards I don't know... but then we're talking about an era where the lead designer started consistently aiming the impulse engines at the nacelles.Β

The rest of her I love though - it's a vast improvement on the original!

kjc733 In reply to MonsterousOperandi [2018-12-17 18:46:38 +0000 UTC]

Yep, articulation for the sake of having something move - show producers for you. A nice design is all that is needed to "Wow", not pointlessly moving stuff. And as an engineer I hated the idea of drive units being on a pivot.
As for Xanion engines, I have no idea what they are. The nacelles are derived from those used on my Seeker class, which were in turn derived from Hellkite's original Seeker concept art.
www.deviantart.com/hellkite-1/…
Of course I've sort of made them my standard nacelle for the slipstream fleet (Seeker, Envoy, Midway and now Intrepid).

I noticed the profile view looks more sleek now!

The engineering hull is flatter, making the ship less high, which looks very nice now.

This was basically THE thing that totally annyoed me about the Intrepid for years.

SUPER IMPROVEMENT!

kjc733 In reply to Nhlaqgor [2018-12-17 18:41:23 +0000 UTC]

Actually it's an optical illusion. The secondary hull is slightly taller than on the original due to the spine, but because that spine blends right up to the bridge and because the saucer blends into the deflector it looks like a lower profile. At some point I'll post a side by side comparison.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nhlaqgor In reply to kjc733 [2018-12-17 19:42:00 +0000 UTC]

That's intriguing, it looks way more elegant than the original intrepid.

Altough the original had a unusual sleek look (for its time) the side view always looked strangely bulky as if ti would belong to a different ship. It did not really fit to the general theme of the ship.

Your version looks way more professional and just better.

kjc733 In reply to LordadmiralDrake [2018-12-16 18:36:47 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. The main impulse drives are on the underside of the saucer. The original Intrepid has a lowered area on the underside of the saucer, I extended that aft and built the units into it. There are smaller secondary units on the pylons (look at the aft view) as the Voyager Relaunch novels describe a saucer separation capability. Originally I was going to try and design that in... but in all honesty I think the idea is so ridiculous on such a small ship that I decided to focus on making an flowing, integrated design..
