Description
This was painted for my friend Jennifer's sweet 16 today.
It was also my first time painting on a canvas. I got two of them a few months ago because I was like, "Mom! If I buy a canvas, I get another for ONE cent!"
And she let me buy them, but as I was walking out of the store, I realized that I didn't paint. oAo;; So they sat around collecting dust for a while, until just the other day.

So I then I got some acrylic paint and brushes, but I don't have an easel, so I held the canvas with my knees the entire time I painted. It works. o 3o
The first few brush strokes were so crappy looking, I was almost going to give up on it, but I think things got better from there. It took me about 3 hours, which was a lot less time than I thought it took, but I'm happy with the result, and Jennifer seemed to like it. x]

it is such an excellent idea, what you did just leaping into painting like that. I mean, it's evident that you already have artistic experience elsewhere, but if you've never used the medium before and don't really understand how it could possibly limit you, then you're that much more free in what you can come up with, just entering the medium. it's like a quote from the movie "wanted," where a man is trying to get a kid to curve the path of a bullet; "if no one told you that bullets flew straight, then what would you do?"

Hmmm...all those colors and the woman's face really remind me of the anime "Genji Monogatari Senneki." I don't know if you've seen any of it or not, but it's a romance set in feudal Japan, and it's got this gorgeous visual style...so I was just wondering if maybe it had inspired you. Also, this piece just gives me a feeling of love, lost in history....

I'm a horrible impulse buyer too, especially when it comes to art stuff. Everything looks so neat and I want to do so much with it, but it takes me months to realize I should probably use the stuff I buy, haha.
This is really good despite not having an easel. I don't use easels and it's no real loss, I used to just use my bed with a towel to protect from paint splatters and that worked fine. I really like the colours and how you can actually see the brush strokes, it all makes me think of a night time scene in Japan with bright neon lights.
