Description
Aha, after several months it's finally there, the second version of the battle system (renamed "robobash" for now) that and myself will use for our future flash web site. What has been added:
Mostly, the main hero character is done... his animation was a lot of job...
and err... ah the look changed a bit to give a little effect of depth, you can now eliminate the opponent by sending him out of the ring, and there's now a slowmotion feature ^^ you can toggle in-game with the spacebar, mostly to help people with their first dodges/combo. Oh and, although it may be a bit subtile you can sometimes get critical hits that does twice the damage.
Well well, that's about that...
OH... yeah, there is now some music
EDIT: You can now download the game music for free at [link] . This one is "MekThe" but you should check out all of them
So now that's all what changed. Of course, game instructions are still included. Enjoy!
EDIT: As some people pointed me out 1) that herobot's second attack was too lame and 2) that you could easily know the opponent off ring, i did something to fix these points. The ring has been enlarged a bit, and the atttack does some more damage, now
EDIT 2: The ennemy's life points were boosted from 100 to 120
** Oh and, once again, i suggest saving it on your disk for best performances. OR, You can play it on the fullhotsoft website here : [link] and if you use internet explorer you should not suffer any lag = ).
EDIT: Actually the file should now run at full speed on DA! = O.

PWNED! If you're doing an MMORPG I would suggest customizable robots. Different pats for different attacks. Also being able to buy stuff would be nice. Paint job is good too.

Also, how about special moves? You could have multi exploding wheelthrow, crazy multispine explosion or ultimate combo! You would need a special attack bar that fills up slowly.

Mainly me, but 3 persons in total. Seb did the initial character design but I re-made/tweaked them and animated them afterwards. And Renaud composed the music.

i have to say i quite enjoyed this demo. that said, from a design aspect, there are a lot of improvements that i believe could be made.
honestly, i think it'd be vastly improved without the sumo-ring aspect to it, unless the ring was significantly enlarged to the point where two or three attacks would not smush you to robotic pulp. if kept, dodges should not drive you backwards, as this can all-too-easily push your character out of the ring, in effect punishing the player for self-preservation despite self-preservation being a major underlying game theme. the herobot could jump straight upwards, perhaps, or do a looping arc up and then just slightly back.
i think the primary reason individuals think this game is hard is due to the fact that dodges have such a short reaction time that if Flash delays the player, then they can't hit it. this lets Joe smash your face with minimal resistance, especially since your dagger-poke attack doesn't do half the damage it should, nor does it knock back as hard as it should, without rapid-fire clicking (which was not explained; i had to discover it by reading other users' comments). as might be expected, rapid-fire clicking is another victim of lag.
this isn't a problem with the game, per se, but rather Flash, which seems to be trying to do many things at once with the animations. this can be fixed a number of ways without sacrificing the game's other special effects, but the primary one would be to use flash to create and then export a series of .GIF-based sprites and then optimizing the set in a separate program before re-importing them (this lends itself especially well to characters with limited color schemes like what's done here). the theory behind this is that we're giving Flash one character part to keep track of, rather than eight or nine separate ones. the destruction cinematic might switch this out at the last second for the presently existing characters and animation sequence to prevent the necessity for re-coding it. if you wanted to keep the parts separate as they are now (perhaps for character customization), using .GIFs for the separate parts is still a fair idea so Flash won't have to calculate the positions of some dozen different abnormal vectors per frame. either method would give a serious jump to framerate - the former more than the latter, if the sacrifice is worth the optimization.
i recognize this is essentially a system test, so i won't comment on what goes on for victory or defeat; that would be decided less here and more in the game it's used in. the same function that says "(x) is kinda like destroyed" can be used to call the victory menu screen if and when that applies. a slight embellishment i might suggest putting in the engine itself is a victory pose, however.
with all that said (and most of these are simple issues, really, or even matters of personal taste), the game is more addictive than it looks, the animations are brilliant, the coding is smooth and seems completely devoid of bugs, and the potential is great. i sense something big could be made from this, and if development continues at the present time, i await such a development anxiously.

Hey, thanks for that extensive review = P . I agree with you, there are obvious flaws in the gameplay. As you know, it wasn't meant to be anything near a final game. As for the lag problem you refer to, I believe the game itself is epured enough so that it's not asking that much from the computer (though it could, depending on your system of course). However, when in a browser, flash movies always seem to lose some framerate, so I've tried to counter-balance it by placing an empty sound that constantly play in stream, thus forcing the animations to skip frame to keep the rythm, instead of slowing down (its a weird trick... it works though). That might be why you feel like you miss some information. And granted, the game doesnt give a lot of time to click and dodge. The conversion of sprites into images like gif is definately the way to go to improve performances, especially when considering working with something else than flash. However considering the work-in-progress nature of the game, for now it's waaaaay more convenient to leave the animation calculated in real-time as it is, to modify it on the fly at anytime.
As for the progress with this game... well.. it's been on iatus for like... 4 years ? o_o (except for some minor updates blah blah blah). I don't think I'll continue it in it's current form, but I'd really like to make something more elaborate with this system. Which might happen. And that's all I can say for now xD.

i've actually been doing some tests with .GIF framerate optimization. my comp's about four years old, so it needs all the help it can get. if i continue developing BDGE in Flash as planned, i'll be making extensive use of the technique if i can show the marked framerate increase i hope to.
i realized exactly how old the project was several seconds after clicking submit. however, if you ever wish to hit all systems go with a project like that, let me know. i would be honored to tag along. :3

Haha yeah, I'd love to see this finished too.. eventually... which may not happen after all. But I'm continuously working on new stuff, so i'm kinda certain that, at some point, I'll start and finish something that will be heavily influenced by robobash. Thanks alot!

Aha, that's because it's coded so that just clicking repedeatly doesn't work. Actually, if you click before the excalamation mark appears, you're doomed.
