Harpers POV

Today was me and Vegas’s first show together.
I was nervous, I hadn’t shown in a long while especially not on a green horse. But we’re going to give it a go.

I got to the stables a little early.
Vegas of course was mud covered.
“What have you done?” I asked him as I entered his field. He looked oddly proud of himself.
I slipped him a peppermint before clipping on his halter.
I tied him up to the cross ties and began bathing him.
Once I was done I threw a blanket on him and put him in his stall, I fed him then went to go get myself ready.

I was in the staff room when Alden came in,
“Big day, huh?” He asks then pours himself a tea,
“Yep” I replied while putting on my boots.
“If you need help with anything, let me know” he added while sitting across from me.
“I will, thanks” I replied then got up and headed out.

Vegas was being feisty during our warm up, which only made my pre-show jitters worst.
“You doing alright?” Alden asks as he leans on the fence of the arena,
“Yea I’m just-“
“Nervous?” Alden said as I walked Vegas over to him,
“Yea” I replied looking down at him.
“It’ll be alright, you guys got it” he added
“I hope so, he’s just is being a bit wild right now” I replied petting his neck.
“I can lunge him for you? If you want to go get your nerves under control” Alden suggested,
“If you don’t mind” I told him as I dismounted,
“Yea course not” he replied as he took Vegas by the reins.

“You’re on in 5” Alden said as he looked up at me on Vegas.
I took a deep breath.
We waited near the arena as the previous horse and rider cleared their round.
“Relax Harper, I can feel your anxiety from down here” Alden said as he put his hand on my leg,
“Easier said than done” I replied without looking at him.

Then we were called out,
I nudged Vegas into a walk.

“Great job you guys!” Alden said excitedly as we exited the arena, and gave me a high five,
“I miss counted, we tipped the last one” I replied as I put my face in my hands.
“That’s alright, it’s only one” he said then helped me dismount,
“I know but we were almost perfect” I replied looking up at him.
“No one’s perfect, you’ll get it next time” he reassured then tipped my helmet. I smiled a little.
“Good boy! Vegas” I told him as i gave him some scratches, then pulled out a peppermint and gave it to him.

After I untacked him I turned him out to his field, and watched him for a bit.
Now I got to leave, take him home.
“I’m proud of you, both of you” i turned around and saw Alden walking up to me,
“Thank you” I replied as I turned back to Vegas,
“You get to go home” he said after a moment, I looked at him.
“Yea” I replied more quietly than I meant to,
“You’ll have to send me pictures” he said then looked at me.
“I will” I replied looking at him, there was something different about him, that I haven’t noticed before.
“Something wrong Alden?” I asked him after a moment, he shook his head.
“I’m gonna miss you both” he added looking at me, I smiled and held my hand out, he laughed and handed me his phone. I typed my number in it, then handed him his phone back.
He pulled me into a hug.

Today is the day we leave Italy.I spent all of last night packing just to be sure I got everything the last thing I would need is Vegas and his belongings. When I made it down to the stables Vegas whinnied at me and trotted up from his field, so I put a halter on him and led him into the barn to start getting him ready. I was going to miss it here, the scenery is beautiful the people are friendly and Vegas is already settled here just when he’ll have to be moved again. But I was happy he’ll get to start his new life with me at WREC and finally have other horses to interact with. When I was done brushing him down I put him in one of the stalls while I got his stuff packed up.
“You’re leaving, huh?” Alden asked as he walked out of the staff room,
I nodded “Unfortunately, yes” I replied
“I’ll miss it” I added looking up at Alden, he held a nervous look on his face.
“What is it?” I asked him, he waited a moment before replying,
“Nothing” he said, I watched him another second before returning to packing.

I loaded Vegas into the trailer with Alden’s help, and said my goodbyes to Khaleesi.
“You’re all set” Alden said closing the trailer door, then turns to me.
“This is going to be a long day” I said as Vegas is kicking the side of the trailer,
“He should settle” Alden assured. I looked at him for a moment before pulling him in for a hug,
“I’ll miss you, thank you for everything” I told him,
“I’ll miss you too, it was my pleasure” he replied. I pulled back and smiled at him before tipping his hat, then headed for the truck.

I was on the plane staring down at my phone, I tried getting some sleep but it wasn’t happening. So I put my headphones in and turned on a podcast, at least the sun was out today and the view was beautiful. The sky was bright blue with clouds everywhere and sun beams every now and again. It was a 3 hour flight, and I was glad I didn’t turn back being only a few hours away from home made me realize how much I missed it and my family.
I leaned my head back and closed my eyes, these next few days were going to be stressful.

The plane landed and my older brother waited for us at the airport with Zoey, he had been watching her for me while I was away and she seemed so happy to see me.
“Hi!” I said as I jogged towards her with open arms, I knelt down and embraced her soft fluffiness. After a moment, I stood up to look at Ben,
“Thanks for watching her” I told him as Zoey jumped up on me,
“Sure” he replied and pulled me into a small hug.
“So, where is he?” he asked about Vegas, I pointed as we walked out to where they were unloading him. Some guy was unloading Vegas and as soon as he saw me and pricked his head up and whinnied. Then we loaded him up into Bens trailer and headed home. I ended up taking a small nap on the way home, I was starting to feel sick perhaps it was my anxiety of finally being back.

When we arrived at WREC I unloaded Vegas and turned him out into his pasture and watched him for a little while until I went back to unpacking the rest of his belongings.
“Need some help?” Ben requested as I pulled out a tub of Vegas’s tack out of the trailer, I turned and handed him the tub and went back to grabbing more stuff. He scoffed,
“You’ve been gone for how long?and your attitude still hasn’t changed” he said and he headed back to the stable. Me and my brother have always had problems, but now they seem to be getting worst. He’s always been a bully to me back when I was young I would just take it, now he acts pissed at me because i won’t take it anymore.

I stepped inside my apartment and let Zoey off her leash, and took in the small rooms before me with large windows and decorated with plants and small fall decorations. I started to unpack my stuff when my phone rang,
“Hello?” I said as I accepted the call
“Hey, I was just checking on you. You didn’t answer my messages” Alden replied. A sudden wave of relief came over me I checked my phone I had just realized he did text me but I’d been so busy to notice.
“Yea sorry. Trying to settle in” I replied trying not to sound rude, I placed my palm on my forehead as an aching headache began.
“I figured but wouldn’t hurt to check, how are you?” He asked as I leaned over the counter still holding my head.
“Never better” I replied sarcastically,
“Let me call you back” I added as grabbed a glass and filled it with water then popped two ibuprofen in my mouth. Then I went and took a nap.

I woke up to Zoey scratching the door, I sat up holding my head and put her leash on before heading downstairs. It was getting dark outside I decided to call Alden back,
“Hey” I said once he picked up “Are you alright?” He quickly asked sounding almost worried.
“I’m fine, Alden” I replied after a moment, i continued to walk Zoey around in the grass.
“You sure?” He asked,
“Yes” I replied almost sounding annoyed, he cleared his throat,
“Okay how is he settling?” He added, “He’s doing good, already made some friends” I replied as me and Zoey headed inside.
“Yea… what are you doing?” I asked him as I entered my apartment,
“Just finishing writing down farrier visits” he replied,
“Oh..” I said after a moment. I started getting ready for bed,
“I’m assuming you’re about to go to sleep?” He asked as if he could see me, “I am” I replied,
“Well I’ll let you go then, goodnight” he said,
“Mk goodnight” I replied then ended the call.

Pretty happy with the turnout, considering it was last minute planning 🫶
