Black Canary came to Earth 1 aftter an insane star-being Aquarius killed her beloved husband. (Aquarius was finally destroyed by the JSA and JLA, before he could cause any more death & destruction)
She acquired the "Canary Cry" power from radiation from Aquarius. Later DC, retconned that by stating,without any justification, that Aquarius' radiation was instead killing her, and her memories and thought-patterns were transferred to her comatose mutant daughter. Thus she awoke from a life-long coma thinking she was Black Canary, but now had a super-powered voice.
