Description

This started as an experiment in perspective for me, as I was trying out one of the Loomis methods of drawing people at different distances... unfortunately it kind of fell apart on me when I realized the particular method ("hanging heads on the horizon") only really works if the people are the same height, and Weiss and Yang most definitely are not. So I tried different ways and think (hope) I did get something that looks about right in the end.

This particular drawing also let me address other deficiencies my art has had -- a portrait of someone where the light is coming mostly from behind their face (Weiss) and a portrayal of Yang at her cheesy best (Marisha Ray of Critical Role gets credit for the tank, though). And it gave me another chance to play with their styles a bit, while trying to keep them recognizable. All in all, it was very fun to work on, right up until I had to throw together a generic background to make the perspective aspect of it work. Backgrounds are annoying, y'all.

So, let me know what you think -- any comments, tips, or critiques are welcome and appreciated!

Disclaimer: I’m red-green colorblind. Because of this, it’s difficult for me to tell similar shades/hues of different colors apart, and, therefore, I need to work with very limited palettes when I color pieces. For shading and highlights, I’ll start with a gray base and lighten or darken shades from there, and then add a color overlay (and, for some skin tones, attempt to add a blue overlay to make it less “hot”). I’ve often been told to be bolder in my highlighting and shading, and I’m trying to be so, but… sometimes it still seems pretty tame. I’m just saying this in case you mentioned I need to do that on a previous piece – I’m not ignoring you, and I appreciate the input. It’s just not very easy for me to implement confidently.

I love their hair! And the perspective looks good to me. It's something I need to work on more, myself. And good god do I love the muscle in Yang's arms XD

I do agree with another commentor that the background was blurred out a bit too much. Also, try adding some seams and/or texture to Weiss's pants - they look a little too smooth somehow. You did such a great job with giving their shirts folds and creases, I think that by comparison, her pants just seem...unnaturally smooth, for lack of better description.

Anyway, the poses are great, the perspective of the two characters seems right, and I love their expressions. Very in-character!

Looking at this with some time having passed, I get what you're saying about the background. Given there's a near background and a far background, I think I should have worked it so there were two different levels of blurriness, with the mountains being moreso than the grass field. That's a bit of a missed opportunity there.

Weiss's pants are unfortunate victims of my limited skills -- I used a gradient tool to get the lighter-to-darker effect her skirt usually has, and I wasn't confident enough in getting the colors right to add the highlights/shading wrinkles and such would require... so I just modeled her pants after some I see a coworker wearing since they just never seem to wrinkle (almost Yoga pants, I think...). I'll keep playing with that in the future. Heck, you barely even notice the gradient here, given so little of her legs are visible, so I probably could have done without.

And I love when people notice Yang's muscles. It just feels right given she's the most physical of the group, and I like creating a bit of difference between their body types.

So I am dropping by to give comments because I like to comment.
I am not a pro so I may or may not know what I'm talking about. I'm just a person who doodles in class because I feel like I am being lobotomized.

Anyway...
I like the skin tone... looks pretty good.
I love the winking, giving the characters some sort of personality.
I love the clothes which further expresses the subject's personality.
I love the anatomy. I think the body is well-proportioned.

Things I worry about...
I feel like the viewing angle is slightly elevated but the background appears to be leveled.
The characters are nice and clear, but the background is blurry. I see that maybe you want the focus on the subject, but the blurriness of the background appears unnatural to me.
I feel like that the nearer grasses should be slightly more detailed than the faraway grasses, to show far and near perspective.
I don't know where the general light source is. The characters appear to be brightly lit, but the grass behind them appears darker in the shade so perhaps casting a shadow.

Thank you very much for the comment! I appreciate your break down of what worked for you and what didn't. The perspective of the background is definitely something I need to work on, but I'm glad to know I did their personalities justice.

Hello hello! I be from

First things first- your anatomy is lovely. Seriously, I don't think I can point out any obvious mistakes in the form and proportions of either Yang or Weiss. Yang's wink, however, throws me off a bit because her face should be more scrunched up on the winking half, instead of her eye simply being closed. I saw you scrunched up the mouth on that side, but the area around the eye should be affected as well in order to make it look more genuine and natural. The shadows, especially on the skin and clothes, are great and help define the shape. The more stylistic hair, though, is a little odd on the realistic faces, especially on Yang. Putting more time into defining the strands with different shades of the hair color, rather than defining them in the black line art, would help in this aspect. Speaking of line art, try changing the color to be a darker shade of whatever it's surrounding rather than making it pure black. This will help bring together the illustration a little bit more, and it won't look as odd on the realistic style. The background seems a tad too blurry, try making it less blurry the closer it is to the viewer, and more blurry the further away it is. This'll help give it a bit more depth.

In any case, I really love this! I hope my input was helpful.

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment on this!

I see what you're saying about the wink -- I think my goal was to insinuate the scrunching of her eye by using shading, but... clearly I failed at that. I'll need to pay more attention to things like that, especially since I seem to draw winks fairly often. And I'll pay more attention to the hair next time, too -- in this instance, I was trying to keep some aspects (the bangs, mostly) recognizable from the cartoon since I changed their styles in other ways, but maybe I just have to stop worrying about that.

Colorizing the line art is something I've just started working on, but, because I'm colorblind, it's a really complex process for me (I have to draw the inks on separate layers for each color that would be represented, and it's always a gamble that I'll then get the new shades of color right) so I'm not sure I'll ever really get around to using it for pieces like this. It's good to know that it could make a difference in others, though.

Thank you again -- I really appreciate this!

Awesome. Really like the adult take on these two, never thought about it but Yang looks pretty good with Short Hair.

Nicely done.

Hello, this comes from someone who has never watched RWBY. What I like about this art is that you did a good job on the perspective, I can see that one is more distant the other, and I also like the clothing you gave them both, the background is not really that important so it is ok that you made the background a blur of sorts, and the colors don't really distract from the main attraction, also, since one is using cold colors while the other is using hot colors, the contrast is even more apparent, they both look like biker girls, but in an almost opposite way with one is more feminine and the other being more tomboyish, and you did a good job on the mechanical hand. Not going to lie, being used to the anime like faces, I was at first a little weirded out about the more realistic faces, but I grew more used to both of them, I wish I had more to add, but I don't really know what could be done better being honest, maybe you should put more detailed on the folds in the clothing, making it a little more detailed, to give a more realistic fell.

Thank you for taking the time to comment! You know, I hadn't thought of the biker girl angle, but it kind of fits -- I like it!

Good stuff!  Yes, perspective can give some people fits but you've got it going well here.  (Yay Loomis!)  It's a mechanical leap of faith to move the eye line away from the horizon line by looking up/down or tilting, and then figuring out where and how the character is standing in relation.  Then comes the squash/stretch of the posture, etc etc.  This works -- applause, applause!

The details in Yang and Weiss is amazing.  Especially Yang's tanktop and the little details underneath. What is on her hand ?

Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to say so.

Yang's right hand is robotic, and she's wearing two gauntlets that can act as guns as well as adding a little pop to her punches. The gauntlet on her left hand is far more visible, though, since her right arm is kind of turned away.

I want Volume Seven to focus on Weiss, and her family drama. This is because Team RAYNBOWLMB (rainbow limb) 🌈💪 is going to Atlas, and who has family drama in Atlas? Weiss Schnee. I’m probably hoping for her to get a reprise of “This Life is Mine”, as she brings down her father.

And, Blake would get some lyrics. I honestly hope that Volume 7 also puts Blake Belladonna into the spotlight, as she’ll definitely help Weiss defeat Jacques, because while Weiss is crusading after her father for what he’s done to her and her family, Blake’s beef 🥩 with Jacques is because he is at least indirectly responsible for Adam’s abuse of her, and his monopoly on Dust, mixed with his disregard for worker’s rights, (especially Faunus workers, but Jacques cares for himself. And himself only), has essentially made Remnant’s survival reliant on institutionalized racism. Which is one of the shittiest things one can do.

For the reprise of “This Life is Mine”, for Weiss’ confrontation with Jacques that ensures his downfall, I’d love it if Blake’s parts took lyrics from “From Shadows”, seeing that he’s a big player, if not the biggest, of the racism that the Faunus have suffered.

It'll be interesting to see what happens, that's for sure. I don't see Weiss ruining her father or her family, but I do see her making a stand for the faunus.

Yes, that will be the perfect way to show how much our snow ❄️ princess 👸 has grown. Maybe Weiss will reveal to the public the side of Jacques that he’s kept secret for a long time, and as she’s a bit too busy saving the world, shut down the SDC, and let other mining ⛏ companies fill the void left behind.

Also hope for a Whitley redemption arc, as it’s likely that he has the potential to be a good kid, he’s just been made into a scheming jerk by his father’s toxic influence.

Plus, who can see Weiss protesting the relatively high levels of speciesism in Atlas, by organizing sit-ins at restaurants that refuse to serve Faunus with Blake?

I would love for that last image to be in the series's epilogue, whenever it comes around. It'd be a fantastic character arc for Weiss.

I've read at least one fanfic that had her wear pants while at least one was a Rule 63 version of her.
