Description
It's been a pretty long time since I've done a random superhero (Summer 2018, I believe), so I figured it was about time to have one from DC Comics as as side project while I worked on some commissions.
So here's Courtney Whitmore, the 16ish-year-old hero known as Stargirl. She was a normal, bratty California teen until she found a cosmic-powered staff in her step-father's office, and within a few hours she was flying around L.A. and rescuing endangered citizens. I'm tempted to draw an older version of her (Starwoman?), but I think I'll push aside that idea for the time being.
Anyhow, let me know what you think -- any comments, tips, or critiques are welcome and appreciated!

Disclaimer: I’m red-green colorblind. Because of this, it’s difficult for me to tell similar shades/hues of different colors apart, and, therefore, I need to work with very limited palettes when I color pieces. For shading and highlights, I’ll start with a gray base and lighten or darken shades from there, and then add a color overlay (and, for some skin tones, attempt to add a blue overlay to make it less “hot”). I’ve often been told to be bolder in my highlighting and shading, and I’m trying to be so, but… sometimes it still seems pretty tame. I’m just saying this in case you mentioned I need to do that on a previous piece – I’m not ignoring you, and I appreciate the input. It’s just not very easy for me to implement confidently.

Oh wow, you really outdid yourself on this one! Great job, she's beautiful!
* I think the stars really add to the piece.

Thank you! I'm glad you like the stars -- it's always a gamble as to whether a background will add to or detract from a piece.

Kevin! You pick such difficult poses and nail them every time! In this one you managed to capture such confidence, even in this very relaxed pose. That subtle shift of her weight to that one hip I think drives that home. And fantastic job with the skin tones on her midsection! They not only look technically perfect, but the colors themselves mesh perfectly with the shades of blue you used for the outfit. Wow! I don't mean to write a novel here haha, but there are all theses wonderful details in this piece that I absolutely adore! Like the gorgeous curve of her face, the smile, her stunning eyes, the way her hair softly lays across her shoulder, her incredibly adorable nose... even the details on the hands are incredible. This is a perfect blend of hard and soft edges, highlights and shadows. Amazing, amazing job dude. Can't say enough!

Thank you, sir, I really appreciate the kind words! I was kind of worried about the skin tones because I went back and forth quite a bit -- using the tones from a comic image led to her appearing rather sunburnt, and that was only really obvious after I did all of the shading and highlighting, so then I had to play with new layers of colors and their opacity until it looked how I wanted (in the end, it probably would have been easier to start from scratch, but it became kind of a challenge thing...). It was fun trying to capture her well, given I usually "age-up" characters when I draw them whether I plan to or not. But the braces probably helped maintain the teen appearance.

She looks awesome and the way you added the details in this piece is really well put! One of the unsung heroes in the DC universe really looks like a shining example of a young woman who shines like the stars and fights in a blaze of glory.

So you make many superhero's like stargirl?

Every once in a while -- I have two big encyclopedias of all the Marvel and DC comic superheroes and villains, so when I'm in the mood, I'll randomly pick a page from one of the two and draw a hero or villain from the page I land on. This time, the DC encyclopedia led me to Stargirl.

Ah nice ^^ lol so ..you didn't create her? she's from DC?
Funny thing is she reminds me of a Marvel hero somehow.

No, I didn't create her -- she's 100% DC Comics property
(I didn't realize I never actually said that in the description, so I went back and edited it to make it clear. Thank you for bringing that to my attention!)

I have done a few, mainly heroes I created in the old City of Heroes game. It's always fun to do, but putting my own spin on other people's characters is fun, too.
(The last one, Gaelic Rage, is currently winning a poll I posted in regard to getting a new look, so... don't get too attached to that appearance!)

Great pic, love it! Courtney was always one of DC and the JSA's finest! However,I kind of liked her better as the Star Spangled Kid and just can't help remembering jack knight whenever one sees the rod staff she now weilds,but...it does suit her. I just wonder if they'll ever bring back jack knight(As starman preferably.) Anyhoo, great pic,JSA heroes rule!

Thank you -- I hope I did her justice! I'm not overly familiar with the JSA itself, but it's always been on my list of things to look into when I have time. I get the sense it's more Golden/Silver age type heroes than the Justice League?

I actually haven't drawn the Doom Patrol -- for the Random Superhero Project, I just open up either my Marvel or DC character encyclopedias and draw a hero from whatever page I land on. But there's about a 1 in 493 chance that, when I use the Dc encyclopedia, I'll land on Doom Patrol's page, so there's always hope! I'll try to check out your JSA stuff when I get a chance.

Actually they are yes,and the JSA is where I first actually saw courtney in action back when she went by the name of the spangled kid. Sorry if I wasn't more specific and made any sense when I went into my tirade about the character here,I assumed wrongly then, but I am always ready to pass along the knowledge of who's who as they say in the DC universe.
Check Wikipedia for more details on the JSA itself it has info on them and her with it. And yes,the JSA are not only the golden age type of super team but they've have also carved out some impressive legacy heroes and teams like Atom Smasher and Infinity Inc(A teen titans version of the JSA.)I also love the Doom Patrol, you ever do any pics of them?
And oh yeah,I myself have some JSA sketches and pics of them in action, more specifically a couple of group pics of what they looked like in their late 90's 2nd series,but...I couldn't squeeze stargirl in there, maybe next time i'll do a pic of her in the future.

Thanks! I tried to give her smile a mix of cheesiness and innocence, since she's so young, so hopefully it hit close to that. The stars in the background, however, just make me feel like I'm really bad at drawing stars.
