Description
Something I want to start working on is drawing full-body poses within a limited space or canvas. I don’t want to give myself the out of just adding more space to the edge of the canvas when working digitally – I want to force myself to figure out what details are necessary and which ones aren’t. I had this pose sitting in my reference folder for a while, and I thought it’d fit Yang well. Obviously I left the tails of her jacket off, but I wanted to have to draw her legs in full. (The line beneath her boots is just a grounding detail to make sure her foot was straight, and I thought the pic looked better with it there.)The shading and highlighting was kind of done as an afterthought since I was mostly concerned about proportions, but please do let me know if you think anything is off there.
At any rate, any comments, tips, or critiques are welcome and appreciated. I hope you like this one!

Disclaimer: I’m red-green colorblind. Because of this, it’s difficult for me to tell similar shades/hues of different colors apart, and, therefore, I need to work with very limited palettes when I color pieces. For shading and highlights, I’ll generally adjust the ‘value’ portion of the HSV setting to make the base color lighter or darker; I’m unable to ‘cool’ shadows by adding blue or anything like that. I’ve often been told to be bolder in my highlighting and shading, and I’m trying to be so, but… sometimes it still seems pretty tame. I’m just saying this in case you mentioned I need to do that on a previous piece – I’m not ignoring you, and I appreciate the input. It’s just not very easy for me to implement confidently.

hEy I'm from www.deviantart.com/projectcomm… !
Straight away I love this piece. The folds are so perfect I'm stunned. The pose is so cool! Clearly, you worked hard on proportions and it paid off!! I love the background and the hair has really nice texture. I love the color palette and hey! I'm color blind too haha! I have Tritanopia and tend to see greens as blues : " ). I love the texture of the clothes and you did really well on shading! Now onto critique hehe. I can't really tell which leg is in front and which is behind. Try adding more contrast where the line is. Maybe add some white or gray highlights. Maybe change the color of the lines to a grayish or dark brown? The boots are a bit big. Unless that's on purpose? I can tell you worked really hard on the upper half of the drawing and less on the bottom half. Try to add more detail to the bottom next time. I get that the pants are black but maybe make them slightly grayish next time since nothing is actually purely black irl. Thanks for listening!! I love this drawing uwu~

Thank you for taking the time to comment! You're dead right about her legs -- and sometimes, at a glance, I have a hard time telling which is which myself. I definitely need to make use of sharper highlights at cross-sections like that, and will make sure to do so in the future.
And as an aside, the pants, I think, are actually a really dark green (which is why the highlights aren't very distinctive). But I know I rely rather heavily on black with some characters (like the one I'm doing now), so I'll keep that in mind.
Thank you, again, I really appreciate you taking the time! And it's interesting to meet someone who's my complete opposite color-vision-wise!

Hi, Pamu of here!
First of all, the art seems really realistic and well-defined. I like the way you did the hair and such as well as the bootyyyyyy (Ooh-la-la). And I’ve been thinking of using this reference for the legs since I couldn’t draw them very well.
My only concern is something isn’t separating the legs, maybe you should try whitish, gray or silver in that case? I’m not really sure. In my style, I usually don’t use the completely-black color since people might be having trouble keeping up with the detail. But I’m still looking for a way in a way on how you do it. In that case, you might wanna look up how to use / deal the color black in certain situations like the hair or clothes.
Still, this is good and may serve as an inspiration for realism-ness. I know my comment is somewhat confusing and somewhat like promoting myself. Hehehe.
I look forward to more of your art, so I decided to watch you!

Thank you for taking the time to comment! I understand what you're saying about the legs -- even being the one who drew them, I'll find myself getting confused as to which one is in front. It's not so bad if you look at the image at its full size, but even so, it shouldn't be a problem no matter how small it is. Looking at artists like Adam Hughes and what they do, I should have just intensified the highlights there so it was clear where one leg started and one leg ended.
And thank you for the watch! Hopefully you won't be disappointed.

Amazing anatomy, amazing pose, colors, wrinkles, just, extremely well done!
I see that you're color blind- you're color blind and you colored this brilliant piece!? By God you're so much better than me already! I absolutely love this piece!
The ONLY complain I would have is that there's nothing separating both her legs so I was a little confused at first which leg is in front and which is behind but gosh, other than that, this character has perfect amount of detail, not too much and not too less.
I'm just extremely impressed with her curves and her face- it's very hard to draw faces at that angle, so amazing job! and her haiirrr <3 they look amazing!
All in all, I give it like 10000 out of 10

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment, Arooj, and, to say the least, you certainly got my day off to a good start. I definitely see what you're saying about her legs, and that's something I've had a hard time distinguishing myself. I probably should have just added a really intense highlight along her right this to distinguish the two, but... hindsight is 20/20.
As for the coloring, I do kind of cheat -- I work in greyscale for the base, shadows, and highlights, and then add an overlay where I use the eyedropper tool to steal the color from a source image of the character (at least that's what i do when drawing cartoon or comic book characters). It isn't always spot on, but it's much better than what I could do myself!
Thank you, again. I really appreciate your input.

Man, I really hope you keep going and keep practicing until you become a beast of an artist!

Hey there! I'm Mack from
I must say that this is amazing! the anatomy, face, and the pose is phenomenal, and I can tell you worked very very hard on this!! The style of your art is also beautiful, its cartoonish yet still manages to make the figure look natural and real. I think my favourite part would have to be the legs. They're so well formed and the curves are very very nice!! (and I'm a sucker for good legs ) Some advice I would give is that while everything else seems to have more precise details to it and cleaner lines, the hair on the other hand looks almost like it's still a sketch. Also, while the highlights are okay, the shading on the hair almost makes it look dirty. I'd recommend experimenting with shading yellow with oranges and maybe even reds! It'll even make the piece stand out more if you do it well. One last thing I'd like to say is that even though the piece is gorgeous, the background, though it may be unimportant, seems a bit lacking. I feel like the piece would look a lot better if you put some time into making the background either compliment the colour pallette of the character or just not add a background at all.
Hope that helps!! would love to see more from you!!

Hello, Mack, and thank you for taking the time to comment. I really appreciate knowing what you think I did well here. For the hair... do you think thinner linework would have helped? I'm always going back and forth on whether the lines should be heavy or light when I look at other artists' renditions of thick hair. This time, I opted for the heavy hand. Unfortunately, as for the color, I'm hopeless there since I could accidentally wind up using pink or who-knows-what when trying to get orange.

Mackelleduff In reply to kmkibble75 [2018-07-28 17:24:07 +0000 UTC]
Well, pink is a little risky but if you do it well you can still make it work! Gosh, I guess being colourblind does make your art a lot more impressive!
I feel like its not a problem with thickness, and more a problem with making the lines look cleaner. Because some of them aren't connected or are just there for the sake of being there. Like on he back of the ponytail those few loose and longer strands look a bit awkward. I feel like if the hair was a bit more collected and the lines were cleaner it would look a lot nicer! although that is just my opinion. There are plenty of hair tutorials on youtube that should explain it much better than me >.<

Excellent anatomy work, especially on the legs! That arm pose is also tough, with the foreshortening. It looks great!
