Description
This picture is a depiction of the true original tale of "The Little Mermaid". Her name was Merina, and her little friend was not a fish but a dolphin, and his name was Fritz, not Flounder. She still falls in love with a human prince like in the horribly innaccurate Disney version, but the ending is nowhere near the same. When the prince decides to marry the human woman he thinks saved him (even though Merina actually did) he isn't just breaking the mermaid's heart, he's also inadvertently sentencing her to death. The deal with the sea witch said that if the prince chose another, Merina would die and turn into sea foam on the waves that following morning. In order to save Merina, her sisters go to the sea witch and give her their hair in exchange for an enchanted dagger that Merina must plunge into the prince's heart. When his blood hits her feet she'll become a mermaid again and be able to live once again with her family. Unfortunately, the mermaid can't find it in her heart to kill the prince because she truly loves him, so she chooses to die and become sea foam, and wishes him well. Kind of different huh? This picture shows her sacrifice and her in both her mermaid and human forms. It also shows the haggard forlorn prince in the upper corner and cute, but mildly annoying, Fritz.
