Have you ever wondered how falling stars are born?
Well, now you know.
I've tried to make something more dynamic, less static. A girl walking through the clouds and cutting off stars on her way, with a whole damn lot of wind.
I've also tried to work with colours I rarely use, blues. And tried to darken my shades, but it's hard - I'm starting to believe it's my watercolour that isn't pigmented enough. I'll buy a few new colours and see whether it's a problem with me or my paint.
Anyway, I must say I like this one enormously for some reason. She seems so happy. I've wanted to draw this picture for a long while, and it came out differently from what I expected, but in a good way for once.
The body is extremely elongated and exagerratedly slim on purpose. I like drawing those bodies.
The pose does look quite stiif and unnatural... but hey, so would you if you were walking on those things.
I hope you will like it.
[Made with Staedtler pigment liners, watercolours, liquid frisket, Tria markers, colour pencils, white paint.]

I really love this picture! You're coloring is really impressive considering it was done with watercolors. The concept is really exciting, too.
PS I've looked through the rest your gallery & your artwork is so gorgeous! I really enjoyed it. <33

LOL Poor stars. An interesting concept - I like the stylized appearance. And yes, those stilts must be evilly difficult to walk in!

Very intriguing. The stilts are interesting as are the scissors she's holding, cutting the falling stars.

I had the same problem with darkening my blues. I used green just like you did, and that was the problem. Now I use purple to darken blues, (and black) purple works a lot better than green.

Does it? I'll have to try that, then. Too bad, I liked that blue-green shade...

you can still use it (it is a nice color), but to get darker shades of blue, just use purple.

your artwork is so unnatural, so unrealistic...but somehow you can so totally pull it off..with all the details and color and unigue ideas...it all just seems to work together and create something really beautiful. I just love your work! It's different and creative. Wonderful!

I masked it with liquid frisquet, painted the rest of the picture, then rubbed the masking off. The white colour you see here is the colour of the paper I used.

u should watermark this more. and even tho the anatomy doesn't make altogether sense, it's pleasing to the eyes. how big is this illustration?

KmyeChan In reply to g3m1n1 [2007-05-10 11:29:07 +0000 UTC]
It's 32x41cm in size.
As for the watermark... I don't really like to cover my works in watermarks, just a small one that stops people from selling the work is fine for most cases.

My god, that is just so incredibly different to what you usually do, I think it's great you've stepped out of your comfort zone It's a wonderful idea and I love those shoes, but admittedly I can't find a focal point. By the way, how did you get that texture with your background?

Thank you!
The texture of the background was done with many layers of watercolours and creepy abuse of salt for textures.

Love tha sky The skintones look wired, but that always happens, I've just about given up on markers for skintones. You know, I actually don't think she looks thaaat stiff, I think the arm with the sleve looks kind of stiff, and is the element that is making the rest of the piece look wierd. Also I completely disagree with you about the face, my first impressiong was that she looks uncomfortable and maybe a bit in pain. (Maybe like you were feeling trying so many knew things at once) But hey, you drew her, so you know what she is thinking and feeling better than me.
You are right to be happy with how it turned out.
So awsome that you use frisket, at first I was thinking; how the hell did she get the hair to look like that? I used it once and it stuck on the paper and I it ripped. I swore it off for ever.

KmyeChan In reply to zochiketzali [2007-05-10 11:33:23 +0000 UTC]
Well, frisquet tends to rip off your paper if you use it on somewhat wet areas or on thin papers. But it works just fine on watercolour papers, all you have to do to take it off is to rub your finger over it gently!
As for the face... Well, I must say that the scanning doesn't do justice to her expression, as it made her make-up look like two dark rings around her eyes. On the original her make-up is lighter, and her expression looks somewhat different, she seems to be smiling and saying "Sorry, little star!"

I to double-take
the color is so unusual for you, but so lovely
I also like the way the clothes move, her pose, and...err...everything.
it's nice to see you making an effort to have variety, and it turns out not only eye-catching, but even still stylistically YOU.
for the constructed sky.

This is awesome.... I can count the ways too...
1. I love the concept of it. It makes me feel like this is some highschool play gone all gothy, with the hanging stars and the scaffolding clouds. Even her stilt shoes make you feel like you're part of this rich piecemeal fantasy world
2. What a character! I don't know who she is, but just the way she present herself makes me salivate for more. Her pose, the clothes, even her hair! I love it all! I'm afraid if I get too much closer to the screen, I'm going to get a stilt in my eye.
3. Titling as a double entendre. This is the part I love the most. Look at it. It's not only telling you about falling stars, but you feels it's telling you how stars themselves are created. Some type of legend or fairy tale, which brings me to my next point...
4. Telling a story. It feels like some kind of fractured fairy tale, a peice of modern mythology, something... "How do the stars fall? Well, let me tell you a story..."
This is just awesome. More so than I can put to words. I tip my hat to you, Madam.
