So I finished reading DC's Convergence book, and overall I enjoyed it for what it was, this was not a bad nor good story it was simply average and it also never felt like a big story event type story and given the way DC's current editorial and creative staff is I don't know how well the ending of it will truly play into the current DC Universe and publication plans and it also gives me a moment to pause and ponder how Marvel's Secret Wars and it's aftermath are going to play out.

I think one of the things that really bothered people is that Convergence was hyped to be this big meeting of all of DC’s previous and current realities and that’s not what really happens in it. The true “stars/characters” of the “main” Convergence mini-series are those of the New 52 Earth 2 book which is a title that takes place in another alternate reality from that of the “main” “New 52” universe and also the ending of Convergence sets up their new monthly title as well. As for the heroes of the main  “New 52” Heroes don’t show up until the series is half way done and the “big guns” of the “New 52” sit on the sideline for the issues they are in also the heroes of the various Pre-New 52 realities really don’t join up to save the day until issue 6, cause most of these various heroes are off doing their own events in various two issue mini-series which are all basically have characters from the various realities fight to destroy one another while at the same time giving closure to some of the characters like the Pre-Flashpoint version of Superman.

Now for a spoiler to this series is that the end of Convergence unlock all the various realities of the DC multi-verse every alternate reality that has been shown in the past 75+ years of DC Comics history are now “real” and exist again for any creator to use in a story however and whenever they want to. The only thing is I just don’t see this happening all of the titles starting back in June along with the new titles are obviously taking place in the “New 52” universe even if the “New 52” branding has been dropped from them, even though DC knows that a lot of fans would be more than willing to support titles taking place in these older alternate realities I don’t think they’ll actually ever do it. I really think that at the end of the day Convergence was for the most part a way to give older fans closure and perhaps it is time for us to move on to other things out there and more and more I’m honestly picturing Marvel’s Secret Wars as the same a way to give the older fans closure and a way to not feel guilty as we move on with out lives.

Now would I recommend the main 9 issue Convergence mini-series and it’s 40 additional 2 issue tie-in mini-series, I’d say either just get the 2 issue books you want if you don’t want to read the entire thing especially if you have no interest in the New 52 Earth 2 cast, or you could either wait to get the trade paperback collections or you could wait about a year or so and get the books really cheap at your local comic show.

Multiversity stated that the multiverse that contained everything Pre-Flashpoint was destroyed

And Pre-Crisis Earth 2 "Evolved" (More like replaced)  into Nu52 Earth-2. Same with Captain Carrot's Earth and others.

In the end everything I loved and grew up with was flushed right down the shitter forever. And when Secret Wars 3 ends, my childhood will officially be killed.

Fuck closure. Classic fans shouldn't HAVE to be thrown under the bus to bring in to bring in todays LCD audiences. It shouldn't have to be a zero sum game.

Those who forsake old fans for new ones deserve neither.

I understand how you feel, as I've had those same feelings multiple times over the years. It sucks to see the characters and stories that I've invested 24 years in reading "thrown out".

But what I've come to realize is that they aren't gone they still exist and they aren't killing our childhoods, our childhoods were far more than the cartoons, comics, movies and etc we enjoyed as children, no our childhoods are our memories of those events and sharing them with the people we love and those that we've lost along the way as well. I can easily go to my personal DVD collection to watch many of my favorite childhood cartoons as well as watch them on Netflix, Amazon Prime and Youtube, and my shelves and long boxes are full of my favorite comics from my 24 years of reading comics.

And yes I do agree with you that we the "classic" fans should not be discarded in favor of the newer generation, that is a problem with multiple forms of media these days where the powers that be have forgotten how to appeal to everyone and are only going for one group of people or another.

Very good review. Thank you. well see what DC does...because being able to write stories that take place in any DC anything sounds like it has a ton of potential. However, DC Is the best at wasting potential. I'm not trying to turn this into a Marvel is better than DC time waste idiot rant. I enjoy both. BUT! In my opinion (Also kind of a fact...) Johnathan Hickman (Secret Wars) is a much much much better writer than Scott Lobdell (Convergence), and I know nothing about Jeff King (Also Convergence). I just tried looking up his works on Comixology and all that came up was Convergence. I wouldn't trust Scott Lobdell to write Earth two Teen Titans 2099 let alone a gigantic epic event. Also Hickman's Secret Wars has over 70 issues of connecting back issues that span through several different series hes worked on in the last ...I dunno.... but its been a long time of legitimate story building. That being said I haven't read either, but I do think there will be a clear difference in quality between the two when both have wrapped up.

Thank you, I'm glad you liked it.

Yes DC is the best a wasting potential, which is part of both an upcoming review of and editorial of mine.

I've been amazed at the amount of planning that goes into some events, how some like Secret Invasion and Secret Wars have years of build up and others are just thrown together at a moment's notice.
