Honestly... Yes.
The reason why Gwen died was to make another story about "Parker Luck" (the one that states that Spider-Man will never have a happy or friendly time when he thinks things are going well).Β Where the staff felt that Spiderman had to deal with the death of a close character and at that time, Gwen was so close to Peter at that point, that Gerry Conway (the writer at that time) felt he had to killed her before she took Peter to the wedding altar, which could strongly shake the story. So, I guess it has sense to be lovely and sad at the same time.
