Based on this AU;And suddenly my brain is thinking up AU ideas where Korra doesn’t get a visit from Aang at the end and tries to dive off the cliff but then Asami grabs her hand and she’s like “No, your bending doesn’t define you and I think you’re awesome” and then they make out.

You didn't know? The series ends with Korra and Asami deciding to take a romantic vacation into the spirit world with the two of them leaving holding hands and looking lovingly into the others eyes. The creators confirmed that marked the beginning of their romantic relationship.
Ironically, before that happened, Asami subtly admitted to Korra that if Korra died she might have become suicidal.

Subtle is subtle. Asami literally tells Korra that she thinks she couldn't have 'handled' losing both Korra and her father on the same day. It is open to interpretation, but more than a few interpret it as such.

This ending for the season finale would have been infinitely better than the one we got. Masami-turned-Makorra is just about the worst cop-out I can think of, not to mention it's a completely shallow thing for Mako (and especially Korra) to do. If only this wasn't meant to be a kid's show on a kid's network...Homophobia in television is okay, but basically implying it's perfectly acceptable for a male or female to do something like that to the one they supposedly love? Way to go, Nickelodeon, way to go...
