Description
I will get through this 100 Art Challenge thingy. I WILL. I just gotta stop forgetting about it. X)After reaching the end of his journey, I imagine Sunflash/stripe spent a lot of time lost in memories of the "good ol' days." Just him, his weapon, and his trusted friend Skarlath, picking off unfortunate vermin from Swartt Sixclaw's horde.
If only life had always stayed that simple.
(Outcast of Redwall)
I tried a slightly different approach to coloring on this one, and hope to be able to apply what I've learned to a comic project I'm working on behind the scenes. This was a fairly quick experiment, but hopefully I can do even better things with it as I play around some more.

Just wanted you to know that I featured this piece in my journal in remembrance of Brian Jacques--it's my favourite piece of Redwall fan art, and returning to it I found the theme appropriate. Again, beautiful work.

Skarlath! ;o;
Great angle And I like the use of that texture, gives it that tapestry, frozen-moment-in-time feel.

I loved it for the gentle side we got to see in Sunflash, that doesn't appear too much in badgers.

Would you mind telling me what media you used? I really like the way it looks in this picture and I'm trying to look into some new medias to try myself.

I just realized I'd mistagged this as "traditional" when a good bit is digital. (musta been on autopilot)
That said, this was drawn on a brown-paper recycled paper sketchbook, in ballpoint pen with the white bits done in white colored pencil (much like this [link] one, just without the gray marker), and then I went into Photoshop and put the colors in on a multiply layer. I used a tablet, with the opacity set to pressure-sensitive, so it'd feel a little more like watercolor.

As I said the other day, there's something about the atmosphere of this I like. It feels like it's late in the day, but it's not quite sunset. I'm guessing it's the color of the sky you used for this. And I believe that glint to his golden stripe is great addition. It kind of makes things pop out and make the overall piece more interesting, as does the perspective.
Well done! Again, great to see more Redwall stuff from you.

I'm not too big on Sunflash alone but him and Skarlath as a duo was great! I like how his stripe kind of glows in the light.

Mmmmahaha! This is happiness. "Outcast" is my favorite redwall book, methinks. What a nice feel you've achieved, and I love the little specky things that make it look...speckly? I don't really know where I was going with that one.

It's the texture of the brown paper I drew it on - the original thing I scanned looks kinda like the other badger picture I posted earlier, as it was done in the same sketchbook. With the paper texture preserved, it looks a little more like watercolor, which I sorta liked.

He was indeed awesome. I liked how Sunflash wrote poetry, some about Skarlath, in his later years. It's kinda heartbreaking.

Sunflash is my favorite character in the whole series.

Kobb In reply to Cheddarness8 [2009-01-10 18:54:38 +0000 UTC]
He seems to be the only badger (keep in mind, I haven't read Eulalia! or Doomwyte yet) whose true nature conflicts so sharply with the Bloodwrath. He seemed to be such a mild soul, but still a force to be reckoned with in battle. And the Sunflash/Skarlath duo is one of the more awesome partnerships in the series.

Cheddarness8 In reply to Kobb [2009-01-11 04:38:53 +0000 UTC]
Well, after he finally got Swartt out of the way, didn't he pull a Martin and give up fighting to be a farmer? I'm pretty sure his father, Barkstripe, was a farmer too, but he had Boar, Brocktree, and Stonepaw on his maternal side I think.
Skarlath was way too cool, though I think Jacques liked the S-names in this book a little too much. Didn't Skarlath die in the battle with Swartt and that's why Sunflash renamed himself and gave up on fighting?

Kobb In reply to Cheddarness8 [2009-01-12 07:37:47 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, he did. In fact, I think he was the one that really established the farmland on the mountain's slopes, as a food source. He only ever really seemed to appreciate battle-rage as far as Swartt was concerned.
As I recall it, Sunflash was chasing Swartt and his minions through the forest, where Nightshade arrow'd Skarlath and was instantly set upon by Sunflash. The hares found him crying over Skarlath, but he still had Swartt to deal with. After finally taking him out, Sunflash was indeed content to farm and write under a gentler name - he didn't seem to like the military lifestyle as much as most badgers do.
Hmf, just checked the Redwall wiki to make sure I was remembering the book right (I'm retarded, remembering who killed Skarlath after at least 4 years not reading the book 8|) and while there are tons of S names, there are about twice as many B names... a good number of 'em Redwallers. Huh.

I know I say this about every odd angled drawing but "wee! fun wit perspective"
Very cool though, nice sense of tranquility, a nice balance between the calm of Skarlath above, the setting, and the slight detail his dangerous weapon, that tells of a darker side outside of frame. And small details, like that slight gleam off his "sunstripe" is a nice touch.
