Description
So for those of you who haven't heard yet, Nickelodeon bought the Ninja Turtles earlier this week. Not aquired TV rights or movie rights or anything like that... I mean they bought the entire franchise. As in, Mirage Studios no longer owns them at all. Peter Laird has written in his blog as to why he sold the Turtles, and I can understand completely.
That doesn't stop me from being concerned. So I drew this little editorial cartoon while I tried to sort out my feelings on the subject.
Basically, each of the guys reflects a little part of what I think about it.

Haven forbid. Have you seen what they have done with Teen Titans Go? It's a mockery of their first Teen Titans series.

So now that it's been out, what do you think of the new show?

Initially I was hopeful - they seemed to have an okay balance of action and comedy, and there was some fun stuff going on with the art. They were ticking all the boxes: keep the family dynamic front and center, check. Remembering their roots with the #1 cover pose in the intro, check. The cool comic-style flashback sequences, check. Actual unique character designs for the turtles, check.
But over time, I've been getting increasingly annoyed with it. The characters are inconsistently written, and I'm not sure April really has her own personality yet. There are often serious plot holes even within a single episode, and the writers can't seem to decide whether the show is purely episodic or plot-driven. (The show often points at problem A and gives me a cliffhanger to underline "this is urgent and important." But then, the characters mill around poking at lesser issues for a couple episodes. I am forced to conclude that Problem A was not really all that urgent, and the cliffhanger involving it was frustratingly dishonest.)
I finally fell out of the habit of watching it a couple episodes into season 2, and while I say "I need to catch up," I don't actually have much desire to do it. Maybe someday. :T
On the other hand, the IDW TMNT comics have been absolutely fantastic, and I always grab the issues ASAP when they come out. Also, while I don't collect them myself, I hear that IDW's cartoon-based series is pretty decent, too. So at least there's that

The pic rocks but ... are you really sure about their ownership? Because I still think that Mirage has some of the rights ...
Why Peter aird said that he sold them?

I think Nick made a good serie. Actually, I saw 2003 and 2007 TMNT and... This is my favorite, its funny and also has some 3D/ 2D cool concepts.

It's pretty okay, though the writing's leaving something to be desired, for me. The characters are varying degrees of shallow, and the overarcing story doesn't seem to progress with any sense of urgency. Still, there are some good moments I've enjoyed and occasionally the animation is really rad, so I'll just root for it to get better as it goes forward c:

Yeah, this drawing was made a while ago, when the TMNT property was sold to Nickelodeon by its original creator. People weren't sure if it was going to be a good thing or a disaster.

I personally think that the new one seems to have given them a different character depth and made them with more humor and has put in some ideas that are popular fanfics. I happen to like it.

So far I'm digging it, too. Their interpretation of the characters is pretty solid, and most of the time it's cute and funny. The occasional bit of immature body humor will ruin a scene for me, but never the whole thing. That's just a personal preference, of course. It's a very rare and clever fart/body odor/poop joke that will make me do anything besides groan.
I still favor the 2003 TMNT because of the stronger continuity and serious tone, but Nickelodeon has still done the guys proud, and I've been liking the 2012 show more with every episode.

I agree. Also with the new show, they have different body types instead of them all being ruffly the same shape.

I had been very cagey about this, but all the stuff that came out at Comic-Con went a long way toward quelling my worst fears. It still may not end up being the best TMNT that's ever been, but I'm certainly open to letting it make its own case. c:

Ah i heard about this. i have different feelings about it too, when i saw the new designs for the TMNT, i thought they looked pretty cool, and not too different. But as you said, i worry that it might become too kiddy, although i like some kids cartoons, i guess it just depends. I'll never forgive Nickelodeon if they change the original storyline too much, that just wouldnt be right. I think i'll really miss mirage though...
Well, i guess we'll just have to wait and see, awesome drawing by the way

All I want is for them to respect the old shows in the past, and don't go overboard on the jokes and still make it angsty somewhat.
My biggest fear is that its gonna be like Penguins of madagascar

I do enjoy character development and drama. The '80s show was too heavy on the Silly, and the 2003 show a tad too heavy on the Drama... but if you could get that magic blend of action and comedy! I'm afraid to hope too much, though. It is Nickelodeon after all. X)

Haha, I'm old enough to have grown up with the '80s toon, but I must say the 2003 incarnation appeals to me more as an adult - actual character development, better action, and an actual plotline helped with that. The '80s show is really better if you're a kid.

I am proud to say that i have seen ONE eppisode of the 80's TMNT It was my cousins, it was a VHS he got in a BK kidsmeal. It was the one with some magician that stole something and the turtles are framed. I dunno, it was cool though! I tottally agree that the 2003 show was darker and more for fans of the comics.

Nickelodeon and turtles, I wonder what will come out of that. In my opinion the first animated series had the best looks and best humour (who makes up all those puns?) the second animated series had good fighting scenes, I think the action was more involving and serious than the first and I liked that, but I didn't like the new drawing style so much (the turtles having full white eyes and being all edgy for example). I didn't like much the series after that where they went to space and stuff, that didn't feel like Turtles anymore.
If nickelodeon would take the best out of first and second series, it could be better than the original, but I doubt it. Probably it will just be watered down puns and watered down action with crappy CGI-characters. But we'll see. I hope I'm wrong.

I like that drawing!! I think it reflects a lot of the TMNT fans' concerns. I did like Avatar: The Last Airbender on Nick. I can't really think of any other standout cartoons that have been shown recently on Nick.
I wonder if they'll keep it more in the vein of the 2K3 series. Or the movie. Revert it back to the 80s cartoon. ....Maybe they'll just hang out in the sewer all day, making fart jokes? Bwhahahah!! OMG, wow, that would be bad. I don't know, but I'm excited to see it, either way.

Kobb In reply to Kolaida [2011-01-22 18:43:57 +0000 UTC]
Based on the major press release they put out, it sounded like they were interested in the '80s direction. I'm up for a series with well-written humor if they can manage it - the 2K3 series was kinda hit-and-miss there. And yet, I don't like my Turtles too campy. Action cartoons are more fun to watch if you believe the characters are actually in danger when the bad guys show up.
But I agree - either way, I'll be excited to see it. I just hope I will continue to be excited after the first episode airs. X)

TV is always pretty bad. Good series exist, but are rare. It's easy to think there were more good shows in the past, because people remember them and forget most of the terrible ones. I guess it's up to the talents of the guys assigned to the TMNT show, the direction they decide on (comedy? action?), and how much they care about their work.
I'm kinda impatient to see what they come up with, too... even if it's terrible. :V
